I dont suppose too many of us saw Duncan Edwards play but wasnt he supposed to be a hybrid of Gerrard and Guillett.

#grtbham

You hear older players talk about Duncan Edwards and you can't help but come to the conclusion that he was probably the best English player ever and, arguably, a top 10 world player.

Is the comparison with Gerrard that in his last season Duncan Edwards also failed to make it to the FA cup final?

Ouch!

He would have been had he lived.  A privilege denied him through no fault of his own.

It's a crying shame Gary Shaw's career was cut so short by injury. He'd have been a world star. Instead, his ability is barely remembered by anybody outside the Midlands.
He won Young European Footballer of the Year in 82...as my mate Stefano loves telling me as he received the award in his home town of Montecatini, Tuscany.
He was also Young Player of the Year in 81 I think.

The 1982 award was this
Quote
The Bravo Award is an annual award which is handed out by the Italian magazine Guerin Sportivo to the most outstanding young European footballer. The first winner of the award was Englishman Jimmy Case. Until 1992 only under-23 players participating in one of the three European club cups (UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup) were eligible. Since 1992 any under-21 player from any European League is eligible.

The winners are chosen for the autumn-spring season, not the calendar year.

From cleaning Lord Brian's boots to League Champion and European Cup winner. Not too bad a career then.

He used to clean Leighton Phillips's boots as an apprentice.
On the OS Phillips was interviewed and said
"Gary Shaw was an apprentice and was assigned to clean my boots but he was useless at it!

I used to tell him: "I'm a superstar, captain of Aston Villa and yet I have the worst boots of all the players going on the park."

Difficult to look anywhere else but Shaw for the Villa.

I know he played for the dark side but no one has mentioned Latchford, he definitely knew the net was.

Why do people think there aren't more modern competitors to Shaw? even if you just look at villa's best ever home grown a good number aren't from the area (little, cowans, barry, Cahill in more modern times).

Depends which Latchford you're on about. Peter Latchford knew were the net was, he spent enough time picking the ball out of the back of it.

There's some great players on that list.  And Garry Birtles too.
