I was allowed to watch the game and film fan reactions in the Holte End for a project I'm working on, making a music video for Aston Villa That's Who. Here is a short clip from when Delph scored the opener:

I fucking love that. I love the pause and silence then ROAR!!!!!!

On the Guardian site there was a long discussion about the pitch invasions and there was a lot less sanctimony than there is on this thread. The majority of the neutral posters were praising the atmosphere and saying how Villa had injected some much needed passion into the FA Cup. The comment from the Man City fan is absolutely spot on.

"A match with real atmosphere at long last"

"Wonderful emotional exuberance ... Pity about the BBC coverage. Mark Lawrenson is such a miserable old git."

"The pitch invasion was fantastic to see in today's over sanitised game. Real passion from real fans."

"Fantastic scenes at the end. Real jubilation, its what the corporate game hates."

"As a long, long time Man City fan I can completely sympathise with the Villa fans. Absolute brilliant show of support and emotion. Everything that football is about. Yes, a few hundred goaded the West Brom fans with taunts of '2-0' but Jonathan Pearce really will have to explain how it was a throwback to the bad old days.
In fact, the BBC coverage made me laugh with dramatic statements of how bad the crowd were as the camera showed a bunch of fantastic 8 year olds in their team colours and scarves posing victoriously on the sideline so their Dad could take a photo.
The BBC have been trying to say how the cup still means something and yet when a set of fans finally show what it really does mean they get all sanctimonious. Good on you Villa fans and great to see Sinclair get a brilliantly taken goal. Now see off Manyoo in the semis."

"When the game started I had absolutely no interest but when I flicked back for the last 15 mins I marvelled in the brilliant and passionate atmosphere. Brilliant support by the Villa fans. Even Gary L. had to change his tune when he saw that the vast majority were just enjoying the moment. Get a grip and go and watch tennis or something."

Brilliant, always did like Man City fans. Very apposite given how sanitised the atmosphere is at the Etihad, I can't think of a ground, sadly, with less atmosphere. Maine Road and the Kippax never used to be like that. Exactly what I have been saying all weekend...

I find it a disgrace. A bloody disgrace. How can we seriously expect this to continue? I pay my taxes, my electricity bills, and can afford life's little luxuries such as owning a laptop. Yet this site, this so-called top Villa fans forum, openly allows those on benefits to post amongst us. We should have been told beforehand.

SHOCKED AND SADDENED OF CROYDON.

Can afford the bloody internet though, can't he? Eh? EH?

I'm begining to think we're the only club in the whole world who's fans have invaded the pitch.

Maybe we are, at least in recent times.  I can't think of the last time there was any more than the odd nutter on the pitch before the final whistle.  Certainly not the numbers there were yesterday.

It's a loss of control, and that's not going to go down well.

It makes us look small time I'm afraid and I can't for the life of me see why fans thought it was acceptable on Saturday!

What's this sudden mania to call everything smalltime?

It's really annoying isn't it, if we'd been winning loads of trophies in the last few years I'd understand it but given how poor we've been it's just odd.

Agree, Dave.

This has been one of the biggest weeks at Villa Park for years. Just when it looked like Albion, of all teams, had shown up to put the boot into Villa and send us into a complete tailspin, we showed them that we're not dead and buried and if they come at the Kings, they'd best not miss.

For a number of reasons I'd say.

1. The kick off time which allowed for a good few hours post game drinking
2. Non regulars attending their one of a few games in the season who are more interested in people looking at them than they are at looking at the game.
3. Wanting a selfie taken on the pitch
4. Genuine exuberance.
5. never been on the pitch before
6. Think they'll get away with it
7. A bit stupid and alcohol combination
8. Don't see it as an issue or problem
9. Have always done it at every opportunity
10. For a bet

What's this sudden mania to call everything smalltime?

We are supposed to take our example from the true giants of the game, Chelsea and such. When we score the manager should just turn to the bench and nod knowingly, it was all part of the plan. The fans should whip their phones out to capture the moment ready for youtube followed by the applause. Going wild and losing control, balloons, flags, banners.... it's the Quarter final ffs! Not the world cup final, all so small time.

Do you know what is ''small time''. Playing weakened teams to rest players for the battle for 4th. Diving against Preston North End when you are already winning. Threatening fans with bans if they don't buy a ticket for another game. Booing your manager because he didn't spend £100m in the summer and you've just been beaten.

It's the FA cup, some would say still the best and most famous cup competition in the world and there's only going to be 4 bloody teams left in it and we are one of them. We've gone from cheering a shot like the second coming of Christ to believing we can beat a team or two (Albion anyway). So forgive those who turn up and make it a throwback to the 70's and 80's, the only similarity I saw to that era on Saturday evening was a raucous, partisan crowd getting behind the team and celebrating like it meant something. Sorry it didn't make good TV but it was for us and not to suitably entertain  M Lawrenson from wankersville.

Perhaps it was a bit small-time, but with a caveat: most actually 'small-time' clubs don't usually have as many fans in the stands as we had on the pitch. It didn't feel like some 'oh so umble, we've got our day out at Wemberly' type thing - it felt more like the Dortmund fans felt this season when they got out of the relegation zone. It's a big club coming back a bit, resulting in mass catharsis.
