If you were the chief exec reading that you would surely pull the trigger. Telling the world they are not playing for you and that they are boring at the same time. Just awful.

'I'm telling them to express themselves.' And giving them no tools to do it. You can't just go out and say 'right lads, be expressive' - you have to earn the right to play, you have to work the space, you have to have a plan for when you're on the ball, you have to have players who are trained in movement relating to each other. Does anyone think Tim does this?

If your press officer has to drag you away from a press conference I think your time is up.

I agree with the Villa diseases comment. We are rotten and foster ng.

Fostering? You shouldn't put Tim and Ray in charge of kids. They can't cope!

They weren't the kids they wanted.

Are we really back to being a young, inexperienced work in progress already?

Christ almighty that is a shocking thing for a manager to say. He's completely hung the players out to dry and essentially said it's got nothing to do with him.

The one thing I would hope in all of this is that whatever contract he signed (and indeed the next manager's contract too) has a performance related aspect to it.

If the board are sitting on their arses dithering about change in order to save themselves some cash in the shorrt term then they deserve the pain of a gazillion paper cuts.

No manager would sign. Contract like that. Why should they?

In a recent interview, Allardyce went into a lot of detail about how contracts were put together and how he would only get back into management if the contract was 'right'.

I think its reasonable to assume from this he meant that he would need written assurances about spend and on his performance relative to the spend.   Given he is now in a job, I imagine it is possible to draw up contracts which have a performance related dimension.

I agree. (EDIT: agree with Paul Winch) I've been more pro-Sherwood than most I think, but that comment is the first one I've seen that's really bothered me, for two reasons

1) hanging players out to dry and impact on team morale

2) it's the most concrete evidence of tactical shortcomings, outside of what's shown on the pitch. You can't just say "play exciting, attacking football" to a team, and your job's done. I'm not sure there's quite as much depth to football tactics as some, but certainly you need a formation, a way of getting the ball wide or forward quickly, some understanding of which players do what.

I coach a moderately successful junior team, way below the level anyone involved at Villa has probably ever played at let alone should be operating at now, and I'd be a laughing stock if I said to parents and the squad "don't know why they're crap, I told em to play well".

I agree that the selection and organisation could be a lot better. It is the manager who is picking these players that keep making mistakes.
As i keep saying Vlaar Delph Benteke and Cleverley are better than any of those players that are in thier positions.
How we can expect to do better with worse players?

We even had a replacement Goalkeeper better than the now awful Guzan.

I saw my firsrt game live yesterday and other than jack in spells and Richards the rest were shit to average.

I'm totally with you Chicago - and I'm definitely not excusing Sherwood in any way for the situation - he signed off on these players, he is ultimately responsible - he's not a good enough tactician or coach to get enough out of them to survive, which is why I wouldn't have slit my wrists at Allardyce and why Moyes is now a 'must'.

The squad we have is good enough to be a 'comfortable' mid-table, the manager is failing to get anything like the best out of them. For me, it's that simple.

These sort of comments are a bit lazy.

We leak goals at the back - mistake after mistake - from experienced pros and rookies alike - that's not good enough for mid-table.

The midfield of any combo of Westwood, Sanchez, Vertout and Gana is so sterile - not good enough for mid-table.

Up front/atatcking options of  Ayew, Gestede, Gill - mid-table? dont  think so. Gill promises but doesn't score enough and based on opta type stats doesnt create enough for a mid-table side either.

Not sure I would use the word lazy, but I basically agree with your point. We've got a poor squad now - last year we had a poor squad, lost the best players from it, gambled on some promising young players from abroad (as well as a few less young players based in England...) and guess what? We've still got a poor squad.

I don't blame Sherwood for that, I think he did the best he could in the circumstances, actually better than expectations to be fair. I think we're getting a fair return for our players but it's getting to the point where we might as well try and change the manager just in case.

I keep hearing this, yet we have a one dimensional centre forward, problems in the midfield, dodgy defenders across the back 4 and a goalkeeeper who is shot to bits.
We need 3 players in the spine to save us, maybe 4.
This is no defence of Sherwood, he has made a difficult situation a lot worse with his idiotic Selections, Tactics and use of subs.
Sorry but what I see is
Goalkeeper- Basket case
Amavi, lacks concentration.
Vertout and Gana show promise but miles away from PL standard.
Ayew- neither quick nor powerfull, no threat in an attacking sense.
Richards looks alright in that he is commited, but an organiser? and no decent partner.
Gestede can only head the ball (john Terry could not believe he got someone to mark slower than him)
Neither Jack or Gill really create anything.

Spot on apart from Jack - he's shown he can play and create if there are decent players around him.
