It takes a better man to face alcoholism than to deny it.

Well I love the way this has been skewed. I questioned his appointment not his personal choices / battles / redemptions / sins.
Unless this is a Jehovah's witness convention we are entitled to question his appointment in a top level footballing capacity.

You mentioned his drinking problem, no-one else.

Appointing Ray wilkins was bizarre too.

You keep saying this, but why?
Because I don't like him involved with aston villa

But just because you don't like him doesn't make him a bizarre appointment.
He's been a flop elsewhere though - fulham, Jordan , he has a drink issue too.
It's bizarre

See above.

Mentioning his drink problem is one thing.

Mentioning it in the context of being a reason you think he can't do his job is another entirely.

I have no idea why you've got it in for Wilkins so much. It's a big coaching team, how do you even know enough about the specifics of his role to point the finger at him rather than the others?

Yes, and every time that somebody else has mentioned it, it's been to point out to you that it's pathetic to keep bringing it up.

Decent article on the sherwood situation

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/chris-deeley/tim-sherwood-aston-villa_b_8251388.html

Apologies if its been put up before.

I think the statement:
Quote
Tim, it's October. You've been at the club since February. You shouldn't still be looking around for a single miracle formation. You should know who your best players are. You definitely shouldn't be picking your tactics with some pieces of paper and a dartboard. It's time to go, and leave the job for someone who actually knows what they're doing. Maybe a balloon with a smiley face drawn on it, or something.

Was amusing enough.

That's my biggest issue right now. Not that the team need(ed) time to gel but he doesn't seem to know what formation to go with never mind which players to pick. That he doesn't even know the formation means it will take even longer to get the team functioning. I want him to do well because I like his energy, but this season what I thought we'd see in the team isn't there. No energy, no vigour, no tempo, no direction. The writing is on the wall for him.

He went public with his alcohol problems but I believe he has received treatment and is said to be sober now. It's pretty small minded to make snide digs about it in my opinion.
It's bang out of order if you ask me. If he's turned a corner fair play to him. It takes courage and a hell of a lot of determination to admit to having a problem in the first place. He's more than likely had to apologise to family and friends on the way. Wilkins is a bigger man for recovering (probably forever recovering) that than someone who would have a pop at him for being an alcoholic.

I've heard it said that an alcoholic that recovers is forever a recovering alcoholic and never an ex alcoholic.
In just the same way that people have become wiser with regards to depression since Collymore and Gregory and for the most part accept depression as an illness, addiction is just as much an illness and often coupled to depression or other psychological / psychiatric problems.

I've only had to deal with depression and even with a lot of support from family and access to the right health service resources it's hard work coming back to something like normal and at times a considerable effort to stay there.

I can't begin to imagine what it must be like to reach a point where alcohol or another substance abuse has taken over your life to that extent, or how hard it must be to come back from there.  If that's what the man has gone through and come out the other side, he deserves respect, not snide cheap shots.

As to his coaching abilities, well he was part of the coaching staff that won the double under Ancelloti, but doesn't seem to have been a raging success anywhere else.  Maybe (just like with some managers, our very own Mr 110% for example) he just clicked there and it worked but can't reproduce it anywhere else.
Whatever has gone before, the combination of our current squad, Sherwood and assorted coaching staff is looking like that scene at the end of The Italian Job. (The proper version).  Car crash from nowhere when it was all looking so good and now it's all on a knife edge and looking odds on for a crash and burn ending.

I didn't know about Wikins drink problems

But I never liked him, as a player he was grossly overrated,
I'm not convinced of his abilities to coach, but that's just me probably because I reckon he's a bit of a numpty,
I said the same when we appointed him, and got a bit of stick as most people thought he was a great appointment at the time,
maybe he will be I don't know, but I just don't warm to the bloke

From what I have seen the only thing he seems good at is rubbing along well with players, being a bit of a sound board for the manager and a friendly face for the players, maybe acting as some sort of bridge between the two, which I accept is important but not earth shattering

Wilkins has not done well for a long long time. For that reason I thought his appointment strange but hoped he'd bring something that Sherwood needed. Seems I was wrong.

That Huffington post article could have been written by anyone of about 280 posters on here looking at the poll on the other thread.

It's a great summation of all the various points that have been raised over the last couple of weeks.  Nice to know other people have started to notice.
