No decent manager is going to put their reputation on the line at a club that is a graveyard for managers and, more importantly, does not have sufficient money to buy the players to guarantee reasonable success i.e. top eight finish.

Are our standards and expectations too high in that we want to see something before vocally encouraging the team at home.  You see supporters of other smaller clubs with no history of winning things really getting behind their team.  We did not play well on Saturday but I would not say the team deserved to be booed off at half time.  The players seem to go into their shell when playing at Villa Park.  Is that down to them feeling they are under constant pressure to do well, sometimes unreasonably so.

The Villa job is still very attractive to managers, I reckon. Even after the last few years of absolute dross, we're considered to be one of the big clubs. I was listening to Nigel Pearson on Sky at the weekend and, for once, he seemed to be quite lucid and he said how big a club we still are.

I don't think our standards are too high - we're not asking for Champions league football, just to beat a second division side tonight and to finish higher than 17th in the league

Regarding smaller clubs' fans being very vocal and getting behind their team - I think Palace are the new West Brom, who in turn were the new Stoke. A couple of seasons in the top flight and they're enjoying the honeymoon still. Albion soon reverted to the quiet moaners that we all know and hate. Stoke were the most passionate fans in history a few years ago but they've found their level now. I expect Palace to be the same when the novelty has worn off and they start to struggle a bit ( although I don't think that will happen as quickly as it did at the Albion). I think that's the difference between us and them. Form is temporary and all that,,,

None of the above grounds are a patch on Villa Park when it's in full voice. The flip side is that it can also be like a graveyard when we're being dished up shit football, but that's the same with any club in the league.

Anyway, he's got a fantastic opportunity to win back some goodwill tonight. Come on me babbies!!!!!

Agree Chico.

Am I mistaken in thinking that this is the only period in Palace's history where they had consecutive years in the top flight? If so, this is quite literally as good as its ever got for Palace, so they're going to be quite excited by it all.

Thing is we'll still be patient with the right manager but after 3 years of having an absolute imbecile in charge the chancer detector is working overdrive and we've no time for any of that shit any more.

That might seem unfair on Sherwood but its just the way it is.

A good win tonight and we have something to relaunch our season with (something that was commonly said under McThickie). A defeat and I fear for him, and us.

Crystal Palace is a fantastic name for a football team as is Aston Villa and Accrington Stanley. Is there a story as why they had the Stanley included? Too bust today to do a bit of research.

They only had one player when they started.

There was a team from Accrington called Stanley Villa, and Accrington took their name to become Accrington Stanley.

The Stanley bit comes from The Stanley Arms pub on Stanley Street where Stanley Villa were based.

There's something horrible and plasticky about Crystal Palace.

I think it is a mix of those cheerleaders and the succession of shit-haired local-boys-done-good they've had for owners. The current one looks like a manager from the Croydon branch of Foxtons on holiday in Marbella.
