It's not Sherwood!

To hinge Sherwood's career with the club on the next two games is as unfair as hingeing Ayew's on his ritual sacrifice yesterday. Both exceedingly unfair but both will be assumed seamlessly. Sherwood needs more time and more bread and butter league games to demonstrate lessons learned and progress achieved. From some of us he and Ayew will get patience for others he will be Fredo in the boat. For what it is worth I think he will get a win over Small Heath and a defeat by the bitters. The Small Heath win will give him back a little goodwill but enough to get his team winning regularly? I have my doubts.

I thought Sherwood fucked up massively yesterday, and it wasn't the first time we've seen that happen, far from it. I also think laying into Ayew is missing the point - he shouldn't have been part of that substitution at all.

Sherwood deserves time to get it right, but at the same time he has got to learn, because every time he drops that particular bollock, people will be that little bit more less open to supporting him.

I just watched the BBC interview for the first time. Christ  it is worrying.

It is all very well talking about Sherwood being inexperienced and needing time. That is only true if the mistakes he made were the result of inexperience (or bad luck) and if he is prepared to accept that he made mistakes.

Neither would appear to be the case.

Thinking that a Premier League game is over at 2-0, or that being so totally overrun in midfield is anything other than a recipe for disaster are not managerial errors, they are footballing errors. Sherwood has been in football for decades, does he really know no better?

Putting on a tin hat, digging a trench and pointing the finger elsewhere does not smack of someone likely to learn from their own mistakes either. We've had a few managers do something similar and it has never ended well.

Yes he does need to learn from mistakes,
but right now the Chelsea fan forums are full of supporters saying that Mourinho is clueless, a week ago the same for Man Utd with Van Gaal, two of the most successful managers in the world getting it wrong,
then there is Rogers who nearly won the league just over a year ago and now is getting it in the neck from 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' fans because he's tactically useless

I know we don't  care about those teams only Villa, but I'm just saying that sometimes managers get it wrong even the best ones, it's just a case of getting it right more often, and I think Sherwood will do that

The main thing going for Sherwood is that the football is so much better than under Lambert.  First half yesterday we were excellent, and Grealish and Gil were a joy to watch.  I think a weakness in Sherwood though is that he doesn't understand that things change within a match, and from game to game.  After we deservedly beat Liverpool in the semi last year, he then stuck rigidly to the same tactics, when it was clear that going 4-3-3 against Arsenal's brilliant 5 man midfield was bound to see us chasing shadows and getting battered.  Yesterday I knew at half time that we would be under the cosh, but instead of supplementing the midfield he made the most ridiculous change since Heskey was asked to fill in at right back.

He is the manager of the biggest club in the second biggest city in England and we can't afford to teach him how to do his job. Being manager of this club isn't a bleeding apprenticeship. If he doesn't learn from Saturday Sunday, I wouldn't be entertaining him any longer.

Yes he's a massive gamble. I like his enthusiasm and positivity but serious question marks now over his capability to do the job.
I think appointing Ray Wilkins was bizarre. As was demoting KMac so quickly. Wasn't Petrov brought in as a coach aswell and has since disappeared again.
I think sherwood ultimately is going to need to personally go down a league or two ultimately and learn the trade properly if he wants a long and successful managerial career.

I'm convinced that Gil for Ayew at around 65-70 minutes was a change that was planned from before the game, possibly based on concerns about Gil's stamina.

That he couldn't see that Sanchez was the one most in need of either some help or subbing out is worrying.

The only thing that makes sense about the substitution was that it was going to happen regardless of Gil scoring as he was concerned about his injury...and that's where anything that makes sense ends.

I'd have taken Gil off as well, I just wouldn't have brought Ayew on.

Definitely bringing Gil off was the right decision.  Ayew was not.

Nobody can convince me that it wasn't brain dead not to stiffen the midfield when Gil went off. It was unbelievably obvious. Schlupp was already murdering us down that side and Mahrez was finding space. Hutton for Gil with Bacuna moving forwards and Veretout or Richardson for Sinclair, Gabby or Jack. It didn't have to be park the bus. It just had to be solid.

Carragher made some excellent points on tonight's MNF. With Leicester becoming increasingly threatening, Westwood was still legging it up the pitch leaving huge gaps behind him - and only Sanchez to make a solitary stand as Leicester broke in number when we lost possession. At one point it appeared that Lescott got hold of Westwood and said something about the void he was creating, but Westwood - presumably under instruction - still insisted on getting forward.

If Carragher can see that, and Lescott - in the heat of a game - can see it, why couldn't Sherwood?

That is even before you get as far as substitutions.
