It's easy to say we should have signed him with hindsight. If it was that obvious Clyne was going to develop this way then i'm sure there'd have been bigger and better offers for him than just Saints.

And is Benteke another example of how the club is being run or is it only the player we, and no one of else of note at the time, didn't sign?

I'm sure I remember reading that Southampton and ourselves had agreed a price and Clyne just chose them.

Clyne was highly thought of and there had been talk of a move for a couple of seasons before. It's not that much of a surprise that he's gone on to deliver on his potential.

Nobody's going to argue the Benteke signing but the story was that Lambert was there to watch Vossen so maybe there was a bit of luck involved there. Lambert wasn't bad at identifying a player though. Surely you're not totally satisfied with the way the club has been run over the last few years?

Not at all, but i'm not going to take not signing a player that no one else of note seemed interested in at the time as a sign of how far we've fallen. Some we lose, like that, some we win, like Okore who it seemed chose us over Chelsea.

We had seemingly taken an interest in him though. Not signing a player that goes on to become a good player is always going to be annoying - all I'm doing is voicing that. Equally having a player choose us over others who becomes a good player is something to be happy about.

Only things i'm disagreeing with was your last sentence "Just another example of the way the club has been run in the last few years."

I probably do get carried away with some of my posts. I start out with a balanced comment and by the end of it, it's turned into something else and can lose the sentiment that was originally intended.

Maybe the budget was a finite thing that summer - and we had the choice of spending it on Lowton and Benteke, or on Clyne and Steve Morison.

I doubt that and the Benteke fee was only agreed on the last day of the window. It's more likely that we had identified both Clyne and Lowton, set a maximum price we were prepared to pay for the player/position and refused to go above it.
I was joking.

I think TS has been a revelation since here and the brand of football is entertaining and to a degree successful. I love the attitude of the Manager in an almost Gregoryesque kind of way

BUT

Anyone else uneasy that he keeps say "we wont go down"

Tempting fate a little too much for my liking

Nope. He's saying that when asked about us getting relegated, i'd be pissed if he said anything different.

The interview after the match for the BBC when questioned about relegation where TS responded with "What we play like that? And we get relegated? You're having a larf ain't ya!? Made me shudder if only from a tempting fate (and it biting us on the arse) perspective. I thought Tim looked as though he was a little agitated during the interview. The sooner we can get some points and Sherwood (and the rest of us) can get back to a decent night's sleep (dreaming of the cup final) the better!

Perhaps he should have said "do you want to bet against us".

The one thing I have noticed about Sherwood's Villa so far is that we seem to start slowly in games. We don't normally get going until about 15-20 minutes in. That's a minor point though because the football has been great to watch.

He was a little agitated I imagine having just come back from 2 down, had a poor offside decision given against us, subsequently a clear pen and red card denied, followed by conceding a massive kick in the nuts 89th min goal in a game at the champions we dominated.
