Someone else said yesterday, I used to dread or sigh when Villa were playing now I genuinely relish it, we are not world beaters but at least we are fun to watch again.

Again, not trying to denigrate Sherwood at all, but that is pretty much exactly what we said when Lambert started.

He has done OKish so far. I hope he'll do much better and am happy to give him a couple of seasons at least, but experience suggests we should probably not get too carried away too quickly.

OKish ?

The huge difference though between Lambert and Sherwood, is that Lambert had a summer to get to know the players. Sherwood was thrown in at the deep end, and we were under water let alone splashing around for air. Lambert might have taken over a club post McLeish that was in a bad spot, but nothing compared Sherwood who took over on the back of several straight defeats and worst goals record in Europe.

So far, so good and it is all very encouraging. Don't think anyone will get carried away though, I remember feeling extremely upbeat after our stirring end to the 2012/13 season and we all know what followed.

Extrapolate his league results over a season and we get 47 points. Not brilliant but better than okayish considering the state we were in when he arrived. We'd W0 D3 L7 and scored 2 goals in the previous 10 league games and the majority were thinking we were gone. I don't see how turning that round in 8 games and now the majority thinking we are safe is okayish.

He has actually lost four league games. His approach clearly has both ups and downs, but this is not some Simeone-style miracle - he's arrested our decline, won some matches (including a really impressive win yesterday), and good for him. It's pretty good, and that's good enough for now. We'll see where we go.

Dante, it was interesting that that article focused so little on Mourinho. Sid Lowe was trying to trace something more like a tactical affinity between various coaches who played together at Barca in the mid-90s, but that obviously doesn't apply to Mourinho, who really shows the difference mentality can make. Mourinho makes his players ready to die for him, and that's worth quite a lot. I don't think anyone would feel that way about Lambert, but I get it (to an extent) with Sherwood.

Put it this way, how many folks, especially those not too keen to give Sherwood and his staff much credit, thought the day before Sherwood was appointed that we'd be virtually safe with 5 games to go and on our way to Wembley?

I certainly didn't.

Factor in the injuries and also the fact we lost our opening two league games under him and I think he's done well. Long may it continue.

It was okay-ish up until yesterday having thrown away a few points with tactically poor decisions but that performance over 90 minutes has certainly raised the bar. For once, we really looked organised, purposeful, comfortable with the ball, in fact, after we'd scored I never thought we'd lose. We seem to have found a system that the players all enjoy, basically Lambert's passing 'new style' but speeded up.

Right now it should serve us well enough to stay up and if you'd offered me that the week Lambert was sacked, I'd have bitten your hand off.

After Hull only okay-ish form would likely have sent us down so we have been better than that.

Two wins from 7 up before yesterday was nothing to shout about. Those 3 points yesterday were massive for us.

We're 6th on current form. It doesn't matter which games the wins came in, that is better than okayish.

That's pretty much my view. Well done on steadying the ship, but we'll need to see where he actually steers it long term.

I dont disagree with either if you. But what is long term these days? Maybe he will burn out into a timid husk like Lambert did , but I suspect it will take more than a season to grind Sherwood down.

If we stay up (and I like the way Sherwood openly talks about relegation as a real possibility) it will be interesting to see how he handles a transfer window.

Long term he may not be the man to take us forward, but when he came in the only long term any of us were worrying about was what division we'd be in next season.

Agree with you John.

Im not sure I still see TS as a long term success for us but you cant argue with the initial affect he has had.  If nothing else it it is worth watching AVFC again simply because we actually entertain and look like scoring again. Yesterday was the best performance so far given the opposition.

I dont like the throwing the coat on the floor rigmarole but I love the passion TS shows. I love my footy again and cant wait for next Sunday

So far so good

So why not just say 3 wins in 8, or you could even say 5 wins in 10 in all competitions. That's better than okay-ish.

In in 3 of the 4 defeats nobody would have begrudged us a point in each based on how we played. We've gone from a team that capitulated at the first sign of pressure to one that plays to the end of games with a chance of winning them.
