The comparisons with Gregory and more so with Mcliesh do not ring true with me

Simply on the basis of style of play, Gregory served up extremley negative football although successfully at first, and Mcliesh....well he is well known for the most dour stuff ever watched in premiership history

Now it might be to early to know what Sherwoods style is just yet but from what we know so far it's likely to be a lot more adventurous and attacking
Lambert also came with good intent to play exciting stuff too, and for some reason got lost in a vacuum of indecisiveness, let's hope Sherwood has more joy

It's not just giving them a chance, it's knowing how best to utilise them.

McLeish gave plenty of opportunity to the likes of Clark, Bannan and Herd, but we still looked brutal.

Poor rushed appointment as they took too long to dispatch TSMII.  That said I think or more in hope feel that he might be able to shake things up to avoid the drop.   Should we stay up, then next season is when true extent of his tactical ability will be laid bare and we end up struggling again. meh.

It seems the tactically inept Sherwood got significantly more out of them, than the much lauded and highly thought of tactical genius, modern progressive manager that is AVB.

I've been away from the t'interweb for a few hours and have not had time to read all 45 pages of this thread. I received the news via a push notification from the Beeb to my phone.

When Lambert left I felt some of the relegation depression lifted and I felt more positive. Sherwood's appointment has left me severely underwhelmed. We need a manager who can revitalise the club like Sir Graham did all those years ago. What we've got is a guy with very little PL experience. I hope he sorts us out. Maybe the problem was Lambert and a new leader will freshen things up. I hope so.

I will back him. I want it to work. Welcome to the finest team in the world Tim. You have never been associated with a club of our stature. Make us proud and we will love you always.

Actually, Gregory's football was incredibly positive at the back end of the 1997/98 season.

Comprehensive away wins against Everton, Wednesday, Cov and Southampton, and home wins against Liverpool, West Ham and Arsenal.

Yorke and Joachim up top looked potent, with good delivery coming in from Staunton. We still looked bright the following year (the first part of the campaign, at least) but not making at least the top 3 after our strong start meant we had to sign the likes of George Boateng the following summer.  A good player, but not what we really needed to push on.

In all this hoo haa I think a few people are getting confused that thinking it is a bad appointment and Sherwood is a twat means you're in some way not going to support him or want him to do well.

As if you're not meant to have an opinion on anything he's done in the game prior to today.

I think it's s mental appointment and Sherwood strikes me as dim and unqualified, but I'll want him to do well as much as the next man does. As I am sure all the other unconvinced will.

I agree they were wrong not to get rid of Lambert, but who would you have got in and would you have been happy for Scott Marshall to be contacting Lambert for advice for the next 3 or 4 games?

Players eventually get tired of a manager's instructions and approach even if there is a degree of success.

When it's a scenario like with Lambert- namely, that what the manager is recommending hasn't worked for so long- it becomes doubly difficult to put up with it.

I agree with you, and I was underwhelmed/bewildered by the appointment, but don't you think that the ferocity of some of the reaction has been a bit like chanting divorce statistics from the back of the church at a wedding?

Everyone gets it, it's not ideal, but it's day one. Maybe lighten up a bit.

We gave McLeish plenty of time, despite 99.9% of Villa fans thinking it was an appalling decision.

In fact, it was only DC5 of this parish that seemed to be in favour of that one.
