McLeish was by far the worst, not because he was necessarily the worst manager we've ever appointed; but that it was obvious to everyone except Lerner and Faulkner that this was not going to go well.

He's the only appointment that I was actively against, and was willing to give everyone else a fair go.

When Tommy Docherty arrived to start the revolution it was fantastic. Just the most brilliant and exciting few months ever. A whirlwind blowing away all the cobwebs from Villa Park. 5 straight wins, an exciting cup run, crowds of over 40,000 (59,000 for the Southampton tie).

I thought it was over 62,000 for the Southampton game - I was there and always thought it was one of the biggest crowds I'd been in at VP

59084. It felt like 80,000! Terrific win against the first division's in form team.  Goals from Peter Broadbent, a fabulous player at the tail end end of his career and the popular Lionel Martin . We were on the up and up at long last.

Probably - gates in the fifties, for example, would fluctuate madly.

Eric Houghton was manager when I first started watching.  Meant nothing to me all I can remember is my dad telling me he had such a powerful shot he once burst the nets from the penalty spot. 

Followed by Joe Mercer, and his babes, then Dick Taylor and following him Tommy Cummings.   The football was bad at the time of the last two but I was possibly too young to remember, or care, about the manager. 
Tommy Docherty was the first I can recall who came along with a fanfare and Vic Crowe was a popular choice, firstly because he wasn’t Docherty and secondly he was Villa through and through.

Don’t remember any thoughts about Saunders appointment and from that time managerial appointments and the cult of the manager received more attention from the press and now the internet  and my feelings from then have been mainly summed up by Legion, although I wasn’t 11 when Barton was appointed.

Tokyo & Legion we must be about the same age.

Tony Barton - I was about 11, and was gutted that the only manager I could remember had gone, for reasons I couldn't understand.

Graham Turner - Shrewsbury to Villa, really? Oh well that Mr. Ellis must know what he's doing right?

Billy McNeill - Didn't know anything about him, but it can't go any worse than with Turner can it?

Graham Taylor - Can he be half as good as his Watford team to stop us sliding further? And can he please bring a bit of Elton's money with him?

Jozef Venglos - Desperately trying to remember how his Czech team had played at the world cup, but he must be pretty decent.

Ron Atkinson - Happy & confident. Big name manager. Maybe he'll win the FA cup like he did with that lot from Manchester.

Brian Little - Villa legend, though slightly before my time, desperately hoping it would go well so as not to taint the memories of those who had seen him "walk on water"

John Gregory - Slightly bemused, another Uncle Doug cheapo special?

Graham Taylor II - Please prove that "don't ever go back" doesn't apply here.

David O'Leary - Doug Ellis and a cheque book manager.  This should go well.

Gerard Houllier - Well at least it's someone who's not going to be beaten by the job being to big for him.

Paul Lambert - Hope he can bring some of the gusto of his Norwich team with him.  Then I saw the pictures of him at the ground and it already looked like the job was too big. He'd got that look of "Am I really here? How did that happen?" about him
