Surprised but pleased with Delph signing. A young ambitious footballer with the pick of clubs to join yet decides to stay at a struggling Aston Villa? If that isn't a sign there's light at the end of the tunnel I don't know what is.

I like that fact that he hasn't just gone with the "I'm happy to sign" etc, which would still put a smile on your face, but its the way he has gone in strong with the "this is my club and I love it" line. Players often talk a good game, but players like Delph who reciprocate the loyalty of the club are few and far between.

It also makes weasel face Downing look even weaselier. I hope Delph chops the ****** in half at Villa Park and reminds him of who spent £12 million on a crock with a broken foot.

I'm just really pleased that one of our better players has opted to stay, losing Young, Barry, Milner, Downing from our midfield really pissed me off and made me start hating football. This has restored a little faith.

Let's hope he's going to have a lot of winners medals...

When was the last time we heard any player at any club come out with "this is my club and I love it". Great stuff.

I'm really hoping that this can help us to kick-on a bit now. It's good news whichever way you look at it.

If he didn't sign he'd get a lot more than £12 million.

He's not going to get as much if we sold him now as if he'd walked away in  the summer. That's the point.

Not really - let's say a club has an amount of money that they are prepared to spend on Fabian Delph across his transfer fee and wages. If he's not under contract then he effectively gets all of that money.

If he's got four years left on his contract and we demand a chunk of money then it massively reduces what his new club is giving him in salary.

This isn't like Benteke signing a new contract (or Suarez, Bale and Bony all did before they then left) where it is mutually beneficial for both parties even though it is still expected that they will leave before the end of that contract. Like Dave says, him signing this deal but still wanting to leave only stands to benefit the club, meaning it would be pointless for him to do it if he still planned to go.
