Fuck it, I'd just typed out what you're about to read when I got timed out as I'm using my daughters iPad.  Anyway, at the risk of being tedious, I was at it.  I remember it well.  In the lead-up to the match it was all Tom Finney this, Tom Finney that.  It was another example of the only people wanting the Villa to win were, Villa supporters.  Nearly all the papers had Preston to win except the bloke from the Daily Express who thought Preston were a one-man team which, in essence turned out to be the case.

Another thing about that match was, I think that it was the biggest crowd I ever stood in St Villa Park.  69,000 odd.  My old man reckoned it was more.

BTW, forgot to say, that's the first time I've seen that since that day.  Reminded me so much of my dad.  Thanks for sharing.

I was there as well (with my dad) the FA Cup was the most famous cup competition in the world and always drew huge crowds.

Sky and Murdoch have a lot to answer for.

Jesus, I'm just marvelling at the thought of an FA Cup Qtr Final at home! Hasn't everyone since then been away?

I can't remember if I went to that match - but I am convinced I was at the SF against Wolves at the Hawthorns - in the Smethwick End, with me dad.

My only memory of that match is Pat Saward having to practically leapfrog the ref to try and stop an attack - whether the only goal of the game was scored from that attack, I can't recall.

I wonder if there is any film of the SF ??

I was up the Birmingham Road end with me dad.  Do you recall the fool that got himself on to the roof of the stand and watched the game from there.  I don't think anyone attempted to get him down.

IIRC, Gerry Hitchens got an injured shoulder/arm and, was heavily strapped for the second half.  I think Jimmy McEwan wasn't 100% fit either.  That seriously weakened us that day and I was devastated that I'd been to two semi-finals on the bounce and lost them both.  I was eleven.  It's hard to believe  that it would be thirty-odd years before we reached another semi-final.
