Quote
Paul Lambert said Villa were deserving winners in their FA Cup third round clash with Blackpool.

Villa saw off the Tangerines 1-0 courtesy of a classy goal from talismanic striker Christian Benteke late on.

Lambert was happy with the dominance Villa enjoyed throughout the 90 minutes - and the boss said he was confident the winner was coming.

He said: "We deserved to win the game.

"You have 90 minutes to win a match of football. It wasn't relief. We had so much of the ball again and the team sitting in against us.

"It's testament to ourselves that teams are falling right back against us.

"Credit to the players, it's never easy to unlock a team.

"We had Joe Cole, Christian Benteke and Jack Grealish in there - lots of talented players to make things happen.

"You just have to be patient with it. And the goal was great.

"We had chances before that and never managed to take them. But credit to the team for keeping with it.

"Hopefully that winning goal will kick us on.

"We had a lot of the ball. You've just got to keep knocking at the door.

"We never looked in trouble as such. You've just got to keep patient and build up to get the goal.

"All credit to the team for doing it.

"The lads are adapting brilliantly to the new style of play. You ask any of them how they feel. They are playing with the ball and having a lot of domination.

"You have to remember that the last few games, teams have sat in against us really, really deep.

"But the lads looked really comfortable with the ball. The last few games we've had so much of it.

"I am more at ease with looking at it. That's not to say you're not on knife's edge at times. You always have that feeling.

"But they look really good with the way they're playing and knocking it around and being patient with the ball.

"I am at ease with watching them playing.

"It was a brilliant goal that won it. The last few games, Christian has had big chances to score.

"But he's just come back from an injury so it could take him several games to get up to full speed. But it was a great goal."

Lambert also revealed Ron Vlaar's knee injury will be further assessed this next week.

Paul Lambert. The ultimate in self parody.

Have there been any post match comments from Chuckles?

I just watched his post match interview on AVTV. Very upbeat and pleased with the possession. Thought we should have scored earlier a couple of times.

Good to see him smiling and happy. Looks like the boo boys didnt get him down.

Lambert bemoaning sides sitting deep against us, yet for the vast majority of this season that's exactly what we've done against the opposition.

Sad to hear GREALISH was poor. But when I watch the highlights of the Blackpool and palace games (not to mention sunderland) he's easily the most prominent player in terms of creating chances

Keeper should definitely have got benteke's goal

I'm bored of following villa on Twitter so hats off to anyone going to the games. Jesus.

I cannot believe that any manager would want their team to play as slowly as we do, yet you watch us and you know that is precisely what is being asked of the players when they go out. Surely, the objective is to keep possession and move forward so you occupy the opponents defensive third and keep probing and attacking the penalty area? Or am I missing something. Maybe the new tactic is to make the opponents, crowd, those watching on TV fall asleep and then sneak a goal.

I wish he realised that the reason teams sit deep against us is because we lack any invention and end product and are extremely low on confidence in putting the ball in the net.

They don't sit deep because they are scared of us like we have done for the last 2 years!

Yes and after which he says "I couldn't see them hurting us. I don't care about possession. They didn't create many chances". It's very odd what he's doing. If this was season 1 id be much happier - I want to see us keep the ball. But it's very late for that and I'm concerned he doesn't see the problems we all see

The bit that gets me is:

"You have 90 minutes to win a match of football. It wasn't relief. We had so much of the ball again and the team sitting in against us."

After 2 1/2 years of saying he doesn't care about stats now one is in our favour he's making sure it gets mentioned often enough.

On the radio I thought it could have been Blackpool fans chanting Oyston out?

But no real surprise if Lambert out chants have started.

They did and were getting gradually more vocal until we scored.

Highlight of the game for me was the mock celebration when Sanchez hit a tame shot comfortably collected by the keeper, very funny and obviously aimed at Lambert. This seemed to spark the increasingly loud chants of 'Lambert out ' and 'we want our Villa back'. The goal saved him from real stick, but did not hide the fact that we haven't a clue and must be so easy to play against.Saying all that he ain't going anywhere,if we'd lost this and followed that up with relegation I still think he will avoid the sack,so take the win and hope for a miracle!
