First game back in the top flight. Ruined by Jim Cumbes.

No wonder Saunders got Burridge in soon after !

It never ceases to amaze me how, during the times when football violence was at its worst, away fans could stand on the Witton End without a problem.

Cumbes had some kick on him though, that first one bounced on the edge of their 18 yard box...

I was always a Witton End Dweller until It became fully seated.  For all the years I stood there, man and boy, I never, ever had any problem with opposition supporters and that included all the idiots of the day.  I loved the Witton End, especially when it was naked and exposed prior to the North Stand.  When full the Witton End could heave and sway just like the Holte End.  Ask any late-comers close to ko time.

I remember when Jimmy came to Villa to replace John Dunne (?)
We'd been used to kicks just clearing the half way line. His first kick seemed to go on forever, it seemed as if the whole crowd went 'Fu**ing hell' at the same time  ;D
Was a very good cricketer, too.
He went on to be an excellent commercial manager elsewhere, should have had him back at the Villa.

And he had a Sunday morning local radio show.

Unlike my train journey home from this match where two of us were threatened and forced off at Smethwick Rolfe Street by 6 Leeds - bastards

I remember that we got into the Holte End free for this game because the exit gate was forced open by the the numbers queuing to get in at around 1.30pm.
I'd forgotten just what a great crosser of the ball Graydon was.... happy days.

Watching that clip we played better than I'd remembered it.
One thing that strikes me now is how low-key the goal celebrations were.

Cumbes was a better all round keeper than  Burridge, corners, free kicks we were in trouble with Burridge.  We would have won the league almost certainly with Rimmer in 77.
