21 years ago. Everton away
« on: September 01, 2014, 02:54:29 PM »
Whittingham scores on his debut. I seem to remember that the refereee had to change his shirt at half time because his green shirt clashed with our Asics away kit. Did I dream this or did it really happen? I also remember that the ref played the second half in an Everton away shirt.....? the old white away shirt they had.

And, as always at Everton, there was a fantastic atmosphere in the Villa end

Anyone else recall?

Whittingham makes his mark for Villa
31 August 1993

AFPR

Guy Whittingham, Aston Villa's 1.2 million-pound summer buy from Portsmouth, scored on his Premiership debut to send Everton to their third consecutive defeat.

The 28-year-old former serviceman proved he could cope with promotion to the officers' mess when he stunned Goodison Park in the 32nd minute.

Villa boss Ron Atkinson has been cautious about the big striker, limiting him to just 19 minutes on the field. But after it took a penalty to beat Spurs on Saturday, Atkinson dropped made wholesale changes.

The Midlanders' 4-3-3 line-up was blunted for much of the game by the home team's sheer hard work as Everton tried to recapture the form that brought them maximum points from their first three games

Remember it well, night game wasn't it? Have a vague recollection of the ref shirt issue too.

Funny, only beating Spurs via a penalty was enough to prompt wholesale changes. Halcyon days.

It was a night game. Not to be confused with the night game up there when we fielded 7 or 8 black players - a record at the time.

Ironic, given our opposition.

The black player game was a Saturday afternoon.

That's my memory for you. What about the ref's shirt?

It's coming back to me

the ref started the match in the green shirt that officials used to wear at the time. It clashed with our green and black Asics monstrosity so he changed into a black shirt which also clashed with it. I'm sure he ended up in an Everton away shirt

I was there but have absolutely no recollection about the referee having to change his shirt.  Although agree that the Asics green/red/black stripes is up there as being one of the worst Villa kits of all time.

Great game, the year before Mo Johnston scored a 90th minute winner against us so this was a fantastic result. The M6 was good that night, home within 2 hours.

I went to this game, definitely midweek - I went on the coaches, came back and went to the Dome nightclub, and still went to work the next morning.
I was only 21, no way would/could I ever even consider doing anything like that now.

The ref's shirt incident was at Anfield, not Goodison. He ended up wearing a USA 94 t-shirt inside out.
