The word legend is used far too casually nowadays, but not in Peter Withe's case. His goals and great all round centre forward play took us to the only league title and European Cup win most of us are going to see in our lifetime. A true Villa great.

It seems like only yesterday I was working in a hotel bar down in Devon during my summer holidays before going to uni in 1980 and slagging off the signing of Peter Withe to anyone who would listen. How wrong I was, not for the first or last time by any means

Yes, the reaction to his signing was very much the 'Cleverley' of the day.  With me being one of those that questioned signing a journeyman that Clough thought not good enough to move the Forest team to the next level and not setting the world on fire at Newcastle.  However, Ron saw him as the perfect fit in his team that played in a certain way.  At the end of the day football is a team game and you need players that compliment each other and give variety.  Eleven star names do not make a good team unless they are selected very carefully.

Happy birthday Peter.  You gave me the highlight of a life watching Villa.  You will be remembered forever - now that is a legend.

Good luck with your new managers job at Nakhon Pathom.
