Chesterfield captain Ian Evatt said he was "punched, kicked and spat on several times" by rival fans after the League One club's defeat at Preston.

Evatt claimed he was attacked after the Spireites were beaten 3-0 in the second leg of their play-off semi-final at Deepdale to lose 4-0 on aggregate.

The 33-year-old used to play for Blackpool, Preston's Lancashire rivals.

"To be attacked on a football pitch and fear for your safety is an absolute disgrace," Evatt tweeted. 

Chesterfield said Evatt had given a statement to police  "following an alleged assault as he left the pitch, surrounded by fans".

Lancashire Police confirmed to BBC Sport that a Chesterfield player had contacted them to report an alleged assault.

Some news reaching us from the aftermath of the lunchtime League One play-off game between Preston and Chesterfield, which Preston won 3-0 and 4-0 on aggregate.

Chesterfield captain Ian Evatt has said he was "punched, kicked and spat on several times" by rival fans who entered the pitch after the match.

However you have to look behind the obvious poor results and understand what Harry tried to do. He has put together a team that will go on and absolutely  very successfully ruin that club.
