Whenever his team score a goal Messi always looks delighted. Whenever Ronaldo's team scores he almost looks pissed off that he isn't the centre of attention. Messi looks like he just loves playing football.

And that's why I think Messi is a better player, he makes decisions based on what's best for Barcelona, Ronaldo makes decisions based on what is best for Ronaldo.

Being disliked and being a team player doesn't alter how good the individual is.

Completely disagree on the latter, being a team player in a team sport is massively important.

More assists, more passes (generally more involved when there's not a scoring chance on) and the key one for me is Messi is fantastic at beating his man with skill, Ronaldo is very quick and gets a lot of balls in behind to run on to but he doesn't beat his man all that often.  I'd rather see someone turn a defender inside out than see them beat the offside trap.  Of course in terms of pure brilliance Zlatan is better than both but he hasn't got the work rate or consistency to compete, at his best he's better than either though, in my opinion.

That's a different point altogether although obviously correct. the ballon d'or and various lists of best all time players are not voted for or picked depending on an individuals teamwork but on their individual brilliance. that is what I'm talking about here. Therefore as correct as your point is its rather a moot one. Although conversely it could be argued that Ronaldo's selfishness helps the team more than an ability to be more part of it as its that selfishness that makes them win.

I completely understand, but all this started with me stating that Messi was better in my opinion, and in my opinion being all time greatest in a team sport by being a selfish arrogant knob just doesn't work, I want a player who has individual brilliance in spades but also has the all round game to be a brilliant team player as well.  Each to their own but for me Messi is better than Ronaldo and from the footage I've seen Pele was better than Maradona.

I noticed that whilst the team celebrated with the goal scorer, Ronaldo was off celebrating by himself.
Oh yes he the wanker who waited for the 5th penalty that never came!

Why go off on your own? Things like that are what detract from his achievements. It's all about him.

James split off from the rest of them to celebrate on his own a little as well, so he must be a massive wanker as well.

I really don't get why every little thing Ronaldo does on the pitch is so over-analysed, and sweeping generalisations reached out of his general on-pitch personality. It's like saying because Ronaldo does a lot of philanthropy and because Messi allegedly indulged in a little bit of tax evasion definitely renders the former a saint off the pitch and the latter a massive tosser.

I think the fact that Messi is a better overall player is pretty undeniable, but it should be a footballing ability thing, not a "who comes off as less of a wanker to amateur body language expert eyes" thing.

The statue of Ronaldo in Madeira (I think) certainly puts Messi in the shade.

It's not a lean-to you bastard, it's a utility room.

Not that I'm sensitive about it.

In my experience a utility room is gloomy place where people who have a small kitchen put a washing machine. Posh people have a slightly bigger gloomy space where there is enough room to put a chest freezer next to the obligatory washing machine.

It's got a washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge freezer, sink and a hatstand.

I think you'd class that as bourgeois, Damo.

Why go off on your own? Things like that are what detract from his achievements. It's all about him.

thing is though if you watch it, he celebrates the goal, he comes over, albeit late to celebrate with Hernandez and at the final whistle he comes over and gives Hernandez a big hug. I just think he is over scrutinized. He's not lovable Messi who is not only outstanding but the consummate team player, but he is simply brilliant in his own right and just carries it differently. He's made out to be a villain way more than he should be in my opinion.

How can it possibly detract from his achievements? I agree that it makes him all the more unpopular to those that don't like him but that is all about not liking Ronaldo, not whether he's the best player of all time, or one of the best and better than Messi (or not).
