I think Messi is a better player and, importantly in my opinion, Messi seems like a good role model whereas Diego was a nasty little bastard with dubious off-field activities.

Isn't Messi due to stand trial for tax evasion or something?

Yep because his dad thought of himself as a financial expert.

In my world, tax evasion is a far more serious offense that indulging the nose candy.

As above his dad offered to look after his finances and Messi just let him get on with it.  No excuse but it's hardly the stuff of a criminal mastermind.

For me the top 3 is...

1 Maradona - helped a very average Napoli win the Scudetto two years on the bounce and won the World Cup for Argentina. Dragged then to the final in1990 also. Messi and Ronaldo have yet t hit the same World Cup heights.

2 Ronaldo - not sure why he is universally disliked but he is. Maybe its the arrogance, maybe its the selfishness. But he is just brilliant. Can score with his left foot, his right is strong and brilliant in the air. The complete package.

3 Messi - Because he's not as good int he air as Ronaldo. But it is very close between the two.

Lots of honourable mentions for Cruyff, Platini, Boniek, Pele, jairzinho, Di stefano, Puskas, and of course David Hunt.

I agree with pretty much all of that. I'd take Ronaldo over Messi every time, he's just so strong. Pele never tested himself in Europe so I think Maradona takes that one, likewise Messi's never tested himself outside of Spain, in a league where 2 teams are massively dominant.

Napoli won the league in 87 and 90 and rumours abound that they would have won it in 89 as well had local "businessmen" not been on the end of a big betting loss and so used their "influence" on certain players. I agree with your point though, he took an reasonable Argentina team to win and a weak one to runners up and did much the same at Napoli which the cabal of the Italian FA and Northern/Rome teams all lined up to stop them.

You've got 2 of the multiple reasons to dislike him.
Over and above the arrogance and selfishness you can add the years of diving (something he's reined in the last couple of years to be fair) and the insufferable narcissism.  As a 20 something footballer having a surrogate child with a model?  Really?

For me Messi is number 1 and the other 2 are fighting it out for second spot.

I prefer Messi to Ronaldo but I have no argument with those who see it the other way round it's just a personal preference

I was talking about this with my son and he said if you could create the perfect physique for a footballer on the computer it would come out as Ronaldo, tallish, strong, fast, defined everything you would need to be the greatest
Messi didn't have those gifts of birth, he would not be the perfect specimen for a computer generated player, yet he overcame those hurdles to become one the best of all times

Ronaldo had a headstart from birth with the lottery of the way he is built, Messi didn't yet still made it

So Messi for me,
and not just for that reason but because I just prefer to watch him jinking about with the ball glued to his boots

Whenever his team score a goal Messi always looks delighted. Whenever Ronaldo's team scores he almost looks pissed off that he isn't the centre of attention. Messi looks like he just loves playing football.

And that's why I think Messi is a better player, he makes decisions based on what's best for Barcelona, Ronaldo makes decisions based on what is best for Ronaldo.
