Wait, so all we have to do is pretend to be offended by the songs at the game and the England band will be booted forever????

I WAS OFFENDED!

England fans singing "Fuck the IRA" during the match apparently. It's a long way back down the Gallowgate to the city centre, chaps.

Bunch of divs. No need for it.

When it comes to Ingerlund, the Scots probably had a lot more to be concerned about. Last time in 2000, there was so little agro from the Scots, the English had a go amongst themselves. Our own lot and our nearest and dearest being an example.

Roy Hodgson on that chant, "If anyone was offended, I'm sure the FA would like to apologise to them."  Who is going to be offended?

The worst abuse I ever seen at Villa was towards Trevor Francis,
Which usually had the effect of him playing well and scoring loads of goals against us,    Barsteward

How many goals did he score against us? I don't remember any.

At least 3 in one game at Villa Park for QPR in 1989.

He scored one against us at the Sty, right in front of us at the Tilton, which led to a Savo-at-Blackburn-in-reverse-spitting type scenario.

Well, it was around the time of Punk.

I am on the basis that they remind me of... and more than likely are associated with the EDL who I find very offensive.  The match is at Celtic Park so consequently there would be a greater number of their supporters there.  So, the thinking would be 'how best can we rile them'.

Rather than support what was a fine performance by the team, the first in quite sometime I'll add they would rather stir it up.

Your offence is based on your own assumptions and prejudices, not on evidence. Football fans tend to sing naughty songs for the sake of it. We've heard enough of it down the Villa over the years and it's not necessarily an indication of political persuasion, more of people taking any opportunity to wind up opposition fans because that's what the game is like; them and us.

They were also singing about how Scotland fans should have voted yes to independence, are we to assume that this is an indication of some political bias as well?

Of course there's no evidence, how could I possibly have evidence?  I can assume though on the basis of over 40 odd years following my club home and sometimes abroad and seeing pictures and TV footage of what a moronic thug is with far right tendencies.  The 'No Surrendering' crowd are a particular kind of supporter.  One which I don't much care for and one which I wished didn't represent England.  You may think there there on a wind up which they may well be some of the time.  The "You're Brittish till you die" chant I found amusing but on the whole I happen to think there's something a bit more sinister to that lot than a wind up.

I don't think there is any merrit in generalising 5 or 6 thousand people based on, as you agree, no evidence. You might think that anecdotal evidence of your own expriences is a good indicator, but then following England now is a lot different to following England 20 years ago. The Combat 18 sterotype that you're clutching at is a Tonev shot.

No Surrender is England's "On the piss, my Lord". Embarrassing and pathetic.

both Scots and English fans were laughing in the pub, when the fans sang "God save your Queen" at the Tartan Army.

They aren't you know. I would say that just about every England fans joins in with that chant along with others I don't much care for, and as I personally know some England fans I can safely say they are not all right-wing fascist thugs.
A large group of Tamworth fans go home and away to watch England, I spotted the flags last night, and whilst a couple of them are a bit dodgy and have in the past been a bit "naughty" at matches, most of them are just football fans like me and you. One is a Labour councillor, another is a social worker, two of them are in the process of opening a real-ale micro bar in Tamworth and I don't think any of them are members of EDL, although one did admit to voting for UKIP once.
They all sing No Surrender though, so they must all be right-wing thugs, and I never knew!

Reports state that for the majority of the first half the chant was there to be heard. To such an extent that England officials had to intervene.  To keep that chant up for the majority of the first half might not make some of them necessarily a thug you're right.  I think moron wouldn't be too far from an apt description though even if some of them were Labour Councillors or micro brewery entrepreneurs.  They all might think it's all perfectly harmless banter in the scheme of things but all they are really doing is condoning the perpetrators of these chants and fueling more of it.

Exactly.  Only the IRA, who can indeed go fuck themselves.

The chant was clearly sung because the game was at Celtic Park and would be aimed at winding those Celtic supporters up that may have found themselves from time to time singing pro-IRA songs. I doubt whether any of the 5000 England fans went to bed in their UVF PJs, under their poster of Adolf Hitler.

Don't get me wrong, I am aware it’s a bit of an anachornism, given that the IRA have settled into politics, retirement or gangsterism, so there is nobody there to fuck anymore. I think Barney Ronay has jumped off at the deep end really with his "poison" article, I don't think people have thought a great deal beyond "lets wind up those Celtic fans [if any of them are here] who sit in the corner to our right!".

I am not sure if I would have sung the song, but thinking about its sentiment "fuck the IRA", I have been struggling to think how I should  disagree, beyond the fact that there is nobody really there to fuck. I mean the IRA? Fuck them. Its as concise as that. You're not advocating English or Scottish colonialism in Ireland, you're not suggesting you support British imperialism, that you support murder or death by Crown forces or by Loyalist Paramilitaries, you're probably just, as I say, trying to agitate Celtic supporters of a specific lilt.

I like Ronay, but he really missed the point here. The English have every reason to be pissed off with armchair radical Celtic fans singing 'up the Ra' at EVERY match. If some of them also have bad views about Unionist terrorism then we'll challenge those when we come to them, but I'm for anything which pisses off those horrible, murder-loving, ratbag tosspots.
