if you try and ignore the fact that McClaren has made a massive cock of himself on a few occasions, the balance of the body of his work suggests he is actually a very good coach and a good/potentially very football manager.

I agree.

Also, look at the credentials of the various recent England managers before and after the job. He's far from the only one to have his reputation shattered temporarily as a result.

Yes, I'd happily swap Lambert for him, too, before anyone asks!

Did he ever come for an interview for the job?

Seconded.

I can only think of two occasions where he's made himself look a bit daft.
1. The brolly incident.  If we'd won no-one would have mentioned it again.
2. The Dutch accent interview.  I'll forgive him that one as I occasionally find myself speaking English with a pigeon Danish accent when there's a group of us using English as a common language.  Oddly enough it gets worse with Dutch people present.

Other than with England he's done well either as coach or manager. And who hasn't looked poor as England manager in the last 20 years?

I don't think so. We were scared off approaching because of his recent history (at the time). Fair play to him for turning things around and creating a good and attractive football team at Derby

Scuttlebutt is he was contacted and cocked it up. Whether that was a during a proper interview i'm not sure. The Villa fans thing had little, if any, bearing on it.

He apparently talked himself out of it.

Southampton are just flying. Long with 2 goals today. Apparently this is how you bank £100m in player sales or whatever it was and get better.

Scared off approaching a former England manager who failed to qualify for the Euro's but not scared off from employing a former Blues manager who had a speciality for getting relegated.... welcome to the mind of Randy Half Brain Lerner.

It didn't happen like that; he was interviewed and talked himself out of the job. Given that he'd been sacked by Wolfsburg, then went on to manage Forest for two months and last just over a year at Enschede it's not like we turned down Arsene Wenger. He might prove to be a good manager at a certain level but he's still had more failures than successes.
