Serious question but was it that much more interesting in the 70s and 80s when Liverpool were winning it most years?

I'd say yes. Look at us after promotion under SGT. Nearly relegated, nearly champions, nearly relegated, mid-table, nearly champions, mid-table, nearly relegated, 4th.

There is no chance of that kind of thing happening now.

I'd agree and Soccer, you answered your own question in the second half in that almost any team could finish in the top four in those days, and lots of different teams did, when they had a good manager who could spot a player from the lower leagues or from Scotland. It would be interesting to compare how many different teams finished in the top 4 between 75 and 85 and between 2004 and now. Now, a good manager just means you finish somewhere between about 6th and 10th
Even teams dominating were good at a draw away from home and win was a bonus not like now where they turn up and win and the only debate is number of goals. Yes Liverpool dominated but League was always more competitive. In that 1975 to 1985 era teams like Derby, Forest,  us and Everton won the League.

Definite yes from me.

Whilst Liverpool did dominate it was much more competitive overall. The success of Forest, Leeds, Derby, Villa, Ipswich, Everton prove that. All overseen by excellent managers who built good sides often by not spending that much money, but building a squad over a few season. There was no pressure time wise in those days.

England were still shit though!

Not only that, but look at who won the cups. In the seventies & eighties 13 different clubs won the FA Cup, including three from the second division, and 12 won the League Cup.

And don't forget teams like Norwich, West Brom and Southampton, all of whom had at least one season in the top 4 as I recollect. Excellent managers were what made the difference, they were the most significant variable, now it's just money that is. Another factor in those days is that if you had decent players, they didn't just up and go to Chelsea or Man City or whoever after one season. Though eventually teams like Man Utd did come a calling to players in teams like Ipswich. Imagine how long someone like Sid Cowans, Dennis Mortimer or even maybe Gary would last at Villa now if we won the league...

Imagine it now, Norwich and Villa challenging for the title in the same season. And the following season Norwich beating Bayern away.

The bigger clubs also didn't need to have 2 players for every position or sign players just to keep them from their rivals and then loan 26 them out a la Chelsea. Consequently, the smaller or mid sized teams weren't regularly raided for their better players

QPR are amusingly shit. Their starting 11 is utter bobbins.
I dunno how R's fans put up with it. That's an appallingly negative side to be honest. And how the hell is Karl Henry playing Premiership football. It still sticks in my craw that some people still fawn over Harry Redknapp.

I thought there set up was similar to ours. Frustrate the opposition and nick a one nil

Or a player called Jeremy Goss!

QPR embody lots of things which are wrong in football.

Squad of overpaid truly mediocre players, bought by an absolute chancer of a manager who tries to buy the the same players wherever he goes, backed up by a chairman who doesn't have the first idea what he is doing.

I really hope they go down.

Amused me when Redknapps phone went he had to hand it to Kevin Bond who was sat alongside him. Cant Harry take his own calls these days?
