Brendan Rodgers after the match with Spurs last year:

Video of the Rooney red card.

Definite red, even allowing for who he was kicking

I love the fact that they are all saying it shouldn't matter as it was handball.

Haven't seen much of Lukaku before, but on today's evidence he looks well overrated.

A lot of people were comparing him to Benteke in that stretch he had last season where he was doing really well. My feeling is that he's quite one dimensional and much easier to account for than Benteke who can score goals and set them up in any number of ways. Benteke has two great feet, magnificent in the air and can literally score from anywhere in or around the box. Lukaku is a very good player, but he's no Benteke.

Agreed.  Also, during the world cup Pat Nevin called him a 'highlights player' and I agree - he's good, and he'll score goals and get assists but has the tendency to go missing a little and he doesnt put in the donkey work tracking back and winning headers etc that the really top modern strikers do.

How the hell are Southampton doing extremely well when they lost most of their so called best players?

Lukaku is a fantastic player and he's 2 years younger than Benteke, I think it's a bit soon to say he's no Benteke. Benteke has been a brilliant player and I hope he comes back the same, but I wouldn't say that anyone can definitively say who will be better in the long term yet.

They spent their money extremely sensibly.

They do seem to have bought well and continued playing the same way. I would like to see where they are after they've played a few of the difficult teams though. A lot of their fixtures have come against beatable teams.

I wouldn't call spending £12m on Shane Long spending money sensibly.
