Great stuff and memories here. Les Sealey, BFR, the old Villa Park stands, George Gavin's mustache, classic kits, Hillsborough opening day victory and 5-2 at Spurs.

Funny, compared to the following year this seems to be a bit of a nothing season yet we finished 7th!

I only missed 1 match all season which was a 0-2 defeat at Wimbledon (Selhurst Park) in the February.  Such were the times of being young & single, no mortgage/children etc.  I remember to this day that Luton charged us £13.50 to get into Kenilworth Road and thinking it was an absolute outrage!

Was a great season apart from the run of games without a goal in the New Year but even then we didn't lose many and the performances were still attractive under BFR. V V fond of this season, the only season I've ever had a season ticket and managed every home game.

Still amazing we finished 7th that season. We failed to score in 18 games, and had a run of 1 goal in 11 games, scored at Norwich to make 2 in 12, then smacked 5 in away to Spuds. We also had 11 matches that season where we scored 1 goal. So 29 games of scoring 0 or 1 and we finished 7th!

we had a top defence though. McGrath, Teale, Staunton and eventually Barrett towards the end. Dariuz Kubicki played a lot at winter and did quite well. amazing to think now but BFR bought Barrett as a CB because some used to bitch about Teale and speculate that Macca wouldn't last much longer. If you check out a lot of those old H and Vs its only into the early months of 92-93 that Tealey got the full appreciation he deserved. Barrett would have been at CB with Neil Cox/Kubicki  I guess playing RB.

Gary Charles did very very well in 1995-96. Watch that video again and check out how many goals came from his crosses. He was very good going forward, better than Barrett, but not as good defensively. I did like Fernando Nelson too, particularly in some of the UEFA Cup games where he got pushed into midfield.

I think seem to remember Ryan Giggs mentioning quite a few times in the 90's that Earl Barrett was the toughest opponent he had faced.  Maybe not the best going forward, but rock solid in defence and did the simple things well. 

Looking back at that season, Big Ron really did invest the money we got for David Platt well.

Other than Paul Mortimer, who was quickly shown the door, I think just about all of BFR's signings that summer did well.
