It's both sad and unsurprising that some appalling attitudes remain entrenched is some sectors of society, and that progress hasn't been universal.

As an example, I offer a comment from someone called Søren Espersen, who is the foreign affairs spokesman for DF or the Danish Peoples Party, who recently, whilst attempting to defend a rather poster campaign of rather dubious values, described Obama as "USA's første neget præsident," which prompted a debate as to whether the correct translation of "neger" was negro or n****r.

Espersen was mortified that some people thought it could be translated as n****r when the point was raised on Twitter by a Social Democrat MEP, but couldn't see why most people thought either translation didn't reflect too well on him.

You would think that with RDM on board, that much like with O'Neill, that the take over is highly likely to go ahead now.

Exciting times.

New manager, just about a new owner and time for some hard graft in changing players, work ethic and attitude.

How times have changed so much for the better.  The Beano, no less, had a masthead with a large cartoon of a black African boy smiling over a large slice of watermelon.  No wonder racism became so marbled through British society when children were being exposed to such racial stereotyping.
When I was a little kid I remember Mom working at a hosiery factory and she'd bring home bits of wool for my sisters to play with and one of the colours was n***** brown. Back then it seemed quite all right to use racial stereotypes to sell stuff, Robertsons jam was another offender.

I remember a watercolour paint set I had when I was a kid with had the same name for the  black square of paint.

I also remember being on a course from work once, this would have been about 1986, and a Robertsons Golliwog badge sported by one woman causing a big argument. She was told it was offensive by another woman which caused a 50/50 split between those who regarded it as a harmless relic of their childhood and those of us who by then had become more enlightened. Ricky Gervais got this argument spot on with his line about racism not being bad in the 50s.

When I was at tech in 1987, we were taught the following mnemonic to remember the order of the coloured bands on resistors:

Black (black)
Boys (brown)
Raped (red)
Our (orange)
Young (yellow)
Girls (green)
But (blue)
Violet (violet)
Gave (grey)
Willingly (white)

A few of us kicked up a massive fuss so they said they'd change it but, from the look on the lecturer's face, it was clear they wouldn't bother.
What would have happened, had there been anyone black in the class is anyone's guess! That hardly anyone batted an eyelid was shocking.

Mate of mine, from Wicklow, had a dog called N****r in the early 70s. It was allowed to roam the streets all day and at night time my mate used to have to shout the dog to come in. Imagine shouting that word repeatedly these days?

Visited some friends at Rockfield Studios in Wales one time and as we got out of the car there was a woman in the courtyard calling for her dog 'Sambo'.

There was and remains a streak of deliberate racial provocation all around us.  The perpetrators know exactly what they are doing but do it anyway to provoke a launchpad for their main course which usually is a variation on the theme "political correctness gone mad".

The so called flagship of BBC news, the morning Today programme had a revered anchorman called Jack De Manio.  He once introduced a piece entitled Land of the Niger, about Nigeria.  He called it, clearly and in many listeners' opinion deliberately as Land of the N***er.  Today he would get the same hook that BFR got in more civilized times but then it was all passed off as a bit of a hoot, rather like Johnners in Test Match Special saying "the batsman's Holding the bowler's Willey

Ads, all very interesting, but I can't see what it's got to do with Birmingham dialects, bands from the region, toilet attendants, racism or American spelling. Can I suggest you might want to start a new thread, you could call it something like 'what do you think about the takeover '.

If your palm is open on your head then its an RAF or Army salute. If your palm is facing down then your giving a naval salute.

What if your palm is rosey?

You have got yourself a horticultural sport (accidental genetic mutation).  Take it to Kew and register it as Palmatum Roseum Comrade Blitz.  Made for life.

Sorry if already covered, but does anyone have a snappy summary of how FPP will affect us next year?

Not 100% sure but my memory is telling me the first season we aren't bound by Championship FFP.

I agree, that's how I understand it as well.

No doubt this will changed if it looks like we're about to splash the cash.

Without disagreeing with the gyst of what you are saying Johnners never actually said that.

Doesn't matter whether he actually said or not now, it's gone into commentating folklore, a bit like "For those of you in black & white, it's just behind the blue".
