This has nothing to do with the thread subject (I intend no insinuations towards Xia) and since we've derailed so thoroughly, anyway, I suppose it's alright.

Somewhat topical, though, since we have discussed the habits of Chinese overseas students.

When a private tutor isn’t enough: the industry helping Chinese students cheat their way into and through US universities

The other common brummie one that I've had to train myself out of is island instead of roundabout.  I much prefer our term but it causes far too many blank stares to be useful outside the city.

Agree. other ones I've had to lose:

tuthbrush/paste
forrid - forhead
pop - any fizzy soft drink
gambol
is tha - is there
cob - roll/sub

there are more but that's just off the top of me yed.

I've had strange looks for all of these, 'island' and 'tuth' in particular. 'Bus' pronounced 'buzz' always led to problems as well.

Two expressions I still use in defiance of glares of diagnosis of yampyness are "going up town" (off to the city centre) and "end" (neighbourhood) as in "G e r r u p  y o w e r own end" meaning go home.  Sorry about the letter spacing, predictive spelling is spoiling for a fight.

I still use them here, Brian. Admittedly, I only use them with my kids, as no-one else would have a clue what I was on about.

What about 'ar kid'? I still use that a lot, too. Is it also used elsewhere?

But that's another one I've had to drop - 'Ar mom' 'Ar dad' 'Ar sister' when talking to anyone about respective family members.

Crash the rocks, or crash the jews, if it was jelly sweets

Scallops from the chippy, never seen them called scallops outside of Brum.

2s up, Duck arse and nub end, all used around the smokers corner at school.

So, is it being discussed anywhere the idea that Tony is looking at buying other clubs (ala Man City)?

Scallops 'n' scraps, please. Also, roe in batter (fresh or tinned), which I believe is frowned upon in some parts of these isles.

On Brummie accents, living in Ireland, if i ask for a pint of Budweiser  in the pub they give me a bottle, if i ask for a "point a bud" i get the drink i want.
People laugh when i say tuthbrush and tuthpaste, not too-thpaste, or yogut not yo-gurt.
Gansey is also slang for jumper but derives from the Gaelic geansai Arann - Arann jumper.

I still haven't come across anyone outside Birmingham who knows what the outdoor is.

Gansey isn't a Brummie term, I've heard that all over the UK, especially in Yorkshire.

I was bought up on the borders of Cheshire/Staffs and we used the word Gansey for a jumper with a zip up front sometimes the arms were of a different material to the bodice but that might be a bit pinicky

I'm of the Irish persuasion but I always understood that gansey is a corruption of Guernsey, sort of like jersey.
No, geansaí is the irish word for jumper.
yeah my old man always called my jumper a gansey

I'm from Northamptonshire and we'd say, "crash the ash" for, "may I have one of your delicious cigarettes?"
we used to say that in birmingham when we were 12 years old

as a kid in Aston, we used to know chip shop 'scraps' as scratchings.

Roe.....MMMMMMMMM !!!
