What's a smart city?

I guess that I'm impressed by my phone automatically translating that article means I'm probably too much of a luddite to understand.
Here you go Ads. With the good Dr. Xia in charge we could be top of this league fairly soon too. As reported in Off Topic yesterday.

well no he doesn't if you take a bit of time you can find plenty of info on him and the companies that he/recon/ruikang are involved with.

for example, from the link andyh gave you can get various stock market registrations to search:

http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=000978.SZ
http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=600138.SS
http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=600561.SS

Those are just from their 'culture and tourism' division.

All three of those look hugely overvalued on price earnings ratios. Admittedly, it's only one measure but you wouldn't expect your average pension fund to be investing in them, that's for sure.

It's the Bernstein and King reasons for leaving that worries me. I'm hoping it wasn't because who Lerner was selling to and I just don't trust Lerners judgement The guy is crackers!!

Anyway you would hope things can only get better

Good Luck Tony

I think they'd have said something if that was the case. King actually seemed quite upbeat about our prospective sale, if I recall.

This bit from the OS doesn't seem right some how.
Quote
Dr. Tony Jiantong Xia is the Chairman/CEO and owner of Recon Group. After graduation in China, he was amongst the initial 25 highly rated graduates out of 1,000 sent to study overseas. He spent six years at Harvard and MIT including five months exchange with Oxford University before returning to China to develop Recon Group.
Let's say that he was sent to Harvard and MIT at age 18, he would have returned to China when he was 24, so given that he's now 30 that means he has built a group of companies employing 35,000 people world wide in just six years.
Now call me a Doubting Thomas but I just can't believe that.
Maybe I'm seeing something that isn't there but I'm beginning to think that the Doctor isn't the only one behind all this.

In fact he was that upbeat he fucked off and did one at the earliest opportunity.

It does say develop, not found. It could be a family business maybe?

I think when we storm the league next year and are the most famous team in China we will look back on this thread and chuckle.

As the news sinks in and, with time, the intentions of our new owner(s) become clearer who really 'owns' the club and benefits from it is going to become sharply posed. Richard Murphy of the Tax Justice Network has got the ball rolling.

Quote
There is news this morning that Aston Villa Football Club has been sold. After a disastrous season my first, immediate, reaction was ‘for not much, I suspect’ but then a more interesting question occurred to me, which is what ownership really means in such cases.

Legal title to the share capital in the club may have passed but any football club, and any company of any size, has a reality way beyond that. Who does Aston Villa really belong to? The legal owners, or its loyal supporters who have suffered miserably this season and will still probably turn up for a new season knowing that they now can enjoy the prospect of playing the best club of all, who are Ipswich Town FC, in the Championship? And what of the employees?

The question is a real one. And it is important. I am not worried right now in the context of tax and tracing beneficial ownership. I have concern in an economic sense. To pretend that Aston Villa’s shareholders really do have all the claims on the Club of that name is absurd. The capital in that club was in large part made by and belongs to those who support it and the hundreds who work for it without enjoying the pay rates of the few who failed so dismally on the pitch this season.  In which case it is wholly appropriate to ask how their interests are protected in any situation like this, and what duty to them should be legally (and I do mean legally) recognised when what is called a Club or a company has very clear obligations not recognised in its apparent ownership structure.

I am not putting forward an answer, although in the case of football I have argued for a very long time that local authorities should have a stake in all clubs as agents for the communities who host them. In other situations accountability is the very least of the obligations that should be assumed, hence country-by-country reporting. And a company of any size has, in my opinion a duty to create employee representation structures. But is there more?

What is not acceptable is that we continue with the myth that he or she who holds the shares is the owner. They are, but only of certain rights. Many other rights have been created by and belong to those whose company the legal owners keep in the social sense, and I believe that the time has come for company law to recognise that fact.

Read on The Bells are Ringing forum that a takeover announcement is imminent, anyone else got a handle on this?

They knew it all along. We were wrong to scoff.

We could with a lucky break after the last few years of relentless failure and drudgery. We don't know a lot about the new owners and can't do anything about it anyway, but I think we'll know soon enough how this is going to go, starting with who they choose as manager and what they decide to do with the current squad.
