That was Kunzle's.  My Mom worked there.  She used to come home on a Friday night with all the reject cakes purchased for very low prices.  TBH I always found them a bit sickly.

I think I was only 4 or 5 at the time but remember going down there with my parents and buying a bag of reject cakes, very chocolatey from what I remember, lovely.............

Andre Drucker was a very interesting man.  Before he opened his pastry shop he ran, or may even have owned the Cinephone cinema in Bristol Street.  It was very popular with us 60s hipsters, showing Continental, mostly French and Italian films. I used to try to impress the present Mrs Green by explaining wildly and inaccurately what films like Last Year at Marienbad and La Dolce Vita were all about.

My grandad worked there too.  By all accounts, Mr Kunzle was a really nice bloke.  Shame he's not around now to buy the Villa.

A group of French toffs experiencing group dementia is the best I can come up with. Voted the second weirdest film of all time.  Whatever beat it must have been a doozie.

re " Last Year in Marine bad ".
Sorry to play the pedant here , but it´s ´Marienbad´ ( aka Mariánské Lázně ) just down the road from Karlsbad in the  the Czech Republic . Fabulous Spa Hotel .
The Movie (about the dream of a man in love with an inaccessible woman. But the dream is also a nightmare ).  was described as  " Dazzling, perplexing and pretentious in every sense of that term, a voyage into memory and the subconscious "...definitely one for the Art House Cinephiles........Godzvilla! ( aka Mark Kermode )

Only the actors.  The ice cream girl at the Cinephone had a pair like two piglets up her jumper.
