I hope this turns out to be wide of the mark, as it seems to suggest the worst case scenario - no sale for a while, and drift.

Quote
Paul Lambert to get funds at Aston Villa despite chairman's plans for £200m sale

Randy Lerner will provide manager with money to strengthen his squad even while American tries to sell the club

Aston Villa chairman Randy Lerner will provide Paul Lambert with funds this summer but is facing an anxious wait to complete a £200million sale.
Lerner is keen to sell Villa quickly after announcing his determination to step aside but will continue to back Lambert while he attempts to find a buyer ahead of next season.
Telegraph Sport understands there were extensive talks held with an American consortium earlier this year but negotiations collapsed and there are currently no interested parties.

Lerner will face a minimum of six to eight weeks before a takeover can be completed even if a buyer comes forward, leaving Lambert effectively in limbo.
Lambert will fly out to meet Lerner in New York later this week, with chief executive Paul Faulkner, but will be assured of money to strengthen his squad.

Fabian Delph, captain Ron Vlaar and Gabriel Agbonlahor are likely to be offered new contracts, with their current deals expiring at the end of next season.
But while there will be some funds available to boost the squad, Lambert will surely struggle to attract players while the future of both the manager and the club is so uncertain.

Villa are also facing the threat of losing academy products Marc Albrighton and Callum Robinson. Albrighton’s contract runs out this month and he has attracted attention from Sunderland and Leicester.
Robinson, the England under-19 international forward, is also a free agent this summer and could be available for just £200,000 with a number of clubs including Cardiff City and Derby understood to be interested.

Lambert is also under pressure to offload many of his transfer failures after Lerner expressed frustration at the number of players signed over the past 18 months that have not featured regularly.
Nicklas Helenius, Aleksandar Tonev, Antonio Luna and Yacouba Sylla are on low wages but have barely played this year and are likely casualties this summer.

While Lambert’s summer plans appear in turmoil, Lerner is now pinning his hopes on Bank of America Merrill Lynch finding a potential buyer.
Keith Harris, the respected London-based investment banker, is also assisting and has vast experience of selling football clubs in the Premier League.
Harris is a close friend of Lerner and was pivotal in helping him buy the club in 2006.

Mind you, if a sale was miles off, why would he have bothered making a statement at all?

Whatever the situation actually is, it does show one thing, though, the potential damage of an extended period of speculation and uncertainty.

No sale soon? Exactly what we don't need.

The Paul Simon song springs to mind. '..Slip sliding away..'

John Percy's a pretty cautious reporter. Fair enough, I overreacted there (though you can't deny we are something of a shower in general at the mo), but this is worrying.

No Dave - because of the last 4 years. Mostly.

It's a report based on speculation. There will be dozens before the matter is concluded.

Well I hope you're right. Looks to me more like a report based on information gleaned, rather than speculation, but nobody knows all of what's going on so we shall see.
