I think he came with very good intentions and it hasn't worked quite spectacularly. Football, where there is no salary cap, no real obstacle to new outside investment, is just a very expensive pursuit. Either you are in for the long run at the very top, and continue to spend accordingly, or from the very start have a dedicated and responsible plan. We started with the first version and changed to the complete opposite too quickly and it all came crashing down. Good luck to him wherever he goes from here but this news I hope is exactly wheat we all need. It will be clean broom from top to bottom, so lets see where this leaves us.
Spot on.  Apart from the wheat.  Although even that would be preferable to the chaff we currently have.

I'd rather have a Lerner than some attention seeking chairman or some corrupt billionaire from wherever. Ideally he will bring on board backing and stay at the helm.

To be honest after the purgatory of the last 4 years I couldn't give a toss if the next owners are a consortium consisting of Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot if it results in success.
That is where I am as well RE. I will accept White Supremacist from  Louisiana branch of KKK providing he gives us £300M to spend on players. I am fed up of us being insignificant.

Me and my mates were out driving around town in a Fiat 500, bibbing the horn, with 12 people stood on the roof, waving a huge claret and blue flag until 3am this morning. What a night that was, a match that will live long in the memory.

Nice touch mate.
You reminded me of when I had an old 500 at 18 years old. It was my very first car and I loved it. Since there I always wanted cars with the capote.
And we were a big team at those times.
Nostalgia.

As dismal as the last four years have been, it's difficult not to feel some sympathy for Lerner.  As others have said, his intentions were undoubtedly good and for a while it looked as if we might break through.  But as soon as O'Neill walked and Lerner had to start making some important decisions, his lack of football nous was there for all to see.

It's scarcely believable when you look at our squad that a quarter of a billion quid has been spent on players since he took over.

If Hitler took over the first few years would see great success which proved to be built on no foundations at all and be followed by spectacular collapse. A bit like the last 8 years really.

Really? The absolute last thing I want to happen is for some front company of a Colombian drug cartel rocking up at Villa Park and making the new managerial appointment of Harry fucking Redknapp as their first order of business!

Oh come on they are not going to employ one of their rivals as our manager.

I just think in the end, hindsight being what it is, he backed the wrong horse. He came in wanting to make Villa a top side again and it looked like MON was a solid choice. It certainly wasn't unpopular. He gave him the keys to the kingdom and the debt was way too deep when it all came crashing to a halt. Everything from that point was an attempt to stop the bleeding while hoping they could find a David Moyes who made something out of very little. Unfortunately McLeish and Lambert haven't done the job that I think he hoped Moyes or even Martinez might have had he managed to get either manager.

Does everybody have a sore head today after celebrating the amazing efforts of the players and management in achieving a goal less draw against Southampton at Villa Park? We're in dreamland.

Genuinely made me laugh out loud.

I'm a fucking wreck today.

Such memories, I remember it like it was yesterday. That bit where someone kicked a ball.

I've not been too well recently but falling asleep whilst listening to Villa attempt to get a shot on target against those footballing giants Southampton was the perfect pick me up. I think I was asleep when we achieved it, if anybody going to the final home game doesn't want their complimentary commemorative scarf/flag i'd love one.

As much as this makes me hopeful for the future of the club and what we might still achieve in the game (hopefully soon), I can't help but feel a bit sad at Lerner selling. If he does, I mean. That summer where he'd just taken over and O'Neill became manager - we seemed invincible and we had some right good times. So if he does sell and I ever meet the bloke, I'd shake Lerner's hand.

I agree.

Ooh, but he'd get the M6 sorted out a treat though.

If he is selling, I would expect that Lerner will sell to someone who he believes will have the best intentions for club.
As much as we might feel let down by him over the last couple of years, I think he has the club at heart and will not just 'cut and run' just to make a buck.
