For want of a better phrase, can anyone shed some light on this?

From the 1950s, I believe.

I've seen this photo before which is featured in Simon Inglis's 'Villa Park 100 years' book, obviously in politically incorrect and unenlightened times.

A few years ago someone on here said there were only four games in which the players in the full photo played together, all towards the end of 1950-51. The lack of winter clothing in the crowd makes it likely that it's one of the last two games, while there appears to be a decent crowd, which makes it equally unlikely it's the final game, which attracted a crowd of 25,000. Therefore I think it's prior to the match against Portsmouth, played on 14th April 1951, in front of a crowd of just under forty thousand. The crowd reaction (and that of the players in the full photo) make me think it wasn't a regular occurrence, which is also born out by the fact that nobody apart from Simon Inglis has ever made reference to him.
