Doesn't it just. When I watch us these days and football more generally - witness yesterday's soulless FA Cup games - it makes me weep for how it all used to be and what made me fall in love with football in the first place. Us, a swashbuckling, exciting team going places, with real proper 'Villa type' players, great commentators, grounds with big attendances, character and atmosphere, no knobs doing half-time analysis or tossers phoning into 606 et al saying how so and so should be sacked, teams who could win things and compete at the top end of the league because they could hold on to their big name players and benefit from skilful managers rather than just piles of foreign money, referees whose names you didn't even know, no endless replays of borderline decisions, no knobs doing full-time analysis, my team playing in their proper colours. I could go on....

It's all just unmitigated shit these days

Great to see that again. I was at the game then would have watched it again on Sunday afternoon. Chants of Viiiiilla,Viiiiiillaa, Viiiiiillaaaa, Viiiilllaa ringing out and the electric sight of Ray Graydon teasing the defenders with his runs down the wing.
Accoring to my book, we drank in a pub in Trent Vale before the game.

I really enjoyed watching that team, first season back in Div1, always positive and looking to score, although I have to admit, I'd wiped Pimblett from my memory bank until I read this thread. How we could do with an Ian Ross now.

Will always see in my head as if it was yesterday Ian Ross tackle on tony brown at villa park when we was 0-1 down better than bobby moorres tackle on jairzinho as he wS about to put Albion 0-2 up one of the biggest roars at villa park. Then we went on to overpower them 3-1

Different times but what an entertaining commentary from Hugh Johns."Greenhough striking like a cobra", "The left hook didn't work so they are trying the right" (when we got two corners on opposite sides)- it just added vastly to the game. Frank Carrodus -unsung hero, odd in a number 9 shirt but ran miles and miles for the cause every match. Bet his knees were shot by the end of his career. And that characteristic Ray Graydon sort of celebratory skip on scoring- very apt today as it's the 39th anniversary af one of his very important goals for us!
