Well he has to hold on now because he sure as shit won't be working for a while after his performance as manager with us.

The media would probably give it the familiar 'unrealistic fanbase/no money' angle and he'd be at a Championship club before the year's out.

He will be praying that Benteke saves his skin and he probably will. Unfortunately Benteke will then probably try and force a move out in January.

He should, but he won't. Plus if he did, who would replace him?

A more pertinent question is, if someone did replace him could they realistically do much worse?

It's really starting to have an '86-'87 feel about it. The players in that squad could have formed a team that should have fairly comfortably occupied the upper reaches of the table. But they didn't manage to make a whole which came even close to the sum of its parts. Doug identified this, and reacted in what should've been plenty of time to turn things around. He just made a catastrophic error in his choice of replacement. The current team, as a collection of individuals, should, like their predecessors of nigh-on thirty years ago, be nowhere near the wrong end of the division. We get repeated glimpses of what they can do, but that's all; glimpses, 20 minute spells, sometimes even a whole half. Second halves? What is our manager doing during the break? On the evidence of our own eyes, not what most of us would consider to be "managing". I so wanted him to succeed, I really did, as I have with every man who has been honoured with the position. But, like Turner, he has the look and demeanour of a beaten man who is way out of his depth, and doesn't  know how to stop the rot.
There the analogy ends. I think you'd have to dig extremely deep into the annals of worldwide football history to find a case where a manager has been fired within three months of being awarded a new four year contract. If Randy pulls the trigger, I hold little hope of him not repeating a McNeill-type mistake, least reasoning being that I don't see how he could do better given the fact that we're still up for sale, and a purchaser seems as far away as ever. It would be a brave man to take the job on. I think we're stuck with him. And, as the weeks go by, I'm starting to think we're f***ed.

This is a genuine question which struck me with all the discussion about team talks and crap second halves.

What is the role of a Manager? It would seem not to be to coach players in individual skills on a day-to-day basis or to initiate match day tactics - I assume there are (or were) staff he delegated to for that.

So he buys players and... what?

The manager decides on the first XI, the tactics employed in the game and the subs bench.

He selects the team, decides formation and tactics, coaches and instructs the coaches on set ups, set pieces and game strategy. Sets and reviews fitness levels, decides transfer targets within budgets and is overall responsible for team affairs. Thats how it works at Villa.

I wonder if he'll walk if he saw or heard the crowd reaction as he's been largely free of it?

No. He will want the comp that comes with the sack. He will be out of work for sometime before turning up at a bottom six championship team 12 months later.

Or like TSM or DOL he wont work again as a manager

TSM is working abroad?

Odds are shortening on Lambert being the next Premier League manager to leave his post.

TBF there's not much competition at the moment

With 3 points from 9 matches, if Lambert stays and we maintain this form (and why shouldn't we?) we will end the season on 22 points.

Nothing more needs to be said about what must happen now.

It will be interesting how he reacts to the chants after the penalty. There is no way he will have failed to hear the "we want Lambert out" song.
