I've been following for 36 years and this is the most insipid , negative era I can recall. Even when we went under Billy Mc in 86 it didn't feel this bad and depressing. The club is literally a car crash . Owner wants out but can't sell, failing manager awarded 4 year extension , pantomime assistant manager , 2 best players winding down contracts , tom fox another CEO with zero football knowledge .

My feelings exactly

Im not looking forward to tomorrow

When he got the new contract everything was rosy and lots of people, myself included, were hoping Lambert had cracked it. Randy clearly believed he had. Since then we've gone into an immediate and all too familiar tailspin, Lambert has zero credit in the bank and many people, myself included,  want him out so we can maybe enjoy following our team again. Fickle? Perhaps, but at the moment the new contract is looking a monumentally stupid decision (something our chairman has previous for in respect of managerial choices of course) Maybe it will look a masterstroke by the end of the season. We can but hope but I doubt it.

Were you really fooled by the first four games?

I agree, most fans so not care about the financial stability of their club so long as they are winning. It is only when the shit of debt hits the fan of losing that it all comes into perspective.   See Rangers, Glasgow.

Me? Would I sooner have five Pulis's or Fat Sams and be safe in the Premiership as a result of Lerner's ownership or a mad, profligate splurge by MON followed by four years of this excruciating agony? To me it is a no brainer as a fan whose family saw Villa play in the 1880s.

I was hopeful we'd turned a corner and reasobably optimistic about the season ahead. Would I have given him a new contract? No, I'd have waited a bit. Randy's decision to jump the gun could have dire consequences.

Good post Paulie, nail on head. I wish I understood the finer workings of Lerner's thinking around this new contract. I can't help feeling that Lambert was so loyal to Villa/Lerner in some way that Lerner feels compelled to keeping him, no matter what.  I'm as pissed off as the rest. Lambert, under Ellis would not have survived this.

Under similar circumstances Ellis didn't ditch O'Leary until everything was pretty much done and dusted in respect of the sale.

He didn't give him a new 4 year deal though. He wasn't that stupid, unlike Lerner.

It might be my dodgy memory, but I seem to recall that in the previous poll, most people either voted, that it made no difference to their opinion of Lambert's (lack of) abilities, or that it was a promising start, but he'd got a long way to go to convince people.

I can't remember too many people advocating extending his contract after 4 games.

There was only one person that thought that was a good idea.

Being a slightly nerdy (and apparently masochistic) type, I've just gone back through the results since the start of last season, the false dawn that was Arsenal 1 - 3 Aston Villa :(

In the 48 league games since then, we have lost 4 on the bounce twice, in addition to this season's 6 on the bounce, (oh and 1 set of 3 on the bounce) and have scored just 43 goals.  In that time the opening 4 games this season are head and shoulders the best form we've shown.

The next best is D, W, D, D, W

Other than that we've won 2 on the bounce 3 times (including the start of this season), and gone 2 games undefeated another twice.

If you take the running total of the last 38 games since the start of this season we've peaked at 45 points after the Liverpool game (goal difference was a heady -17) and now sit on 38 points for the last 38 games with a goal difference of -28.

If you look at the last 19 games and multiply by 2, we peaked at a predicted 48 points after Chelsea with a predicted goal difference of -2 and now sit on a predicted 30 points with a predicted goal difference of -48!

We've won 15 points from the last 19 games and have a goal difference of -24.

I can't work out how to show break curves on here, but the one thing that stands out like a sore thumb is, just as everyone's gut feeling is probably telling them, that since the Chelsea game last year, our form hasn't just been relegation form, it's bottom of the table form.  I know it's all a bit ifs buts and maybes, but those 10 points at the start of the season are a statistical anomaly and are the only thing keeping us a float at the moment.

Unless something changes this is only going to end one way and it's not going to be pretty.

Does anyone really think he can turn this around, because I can't see any single thing that points to a happy outcome here.  Anyone who's got an inkling about performance management would see that he's ready for the knackers yard, and that's before you start on all the unwanted records.

I don't think he can turn it around. Even if we were to somehow win tomorrow night - and I never thought I would say this before playing Southampton (respect to them though) - I still would expect it to be a blip or anomaly. We have never managed to push on and have a good run of consistent results barring a few wins at the end of his first season.  Whats his longest unbeaten run in the league? Cant be many at all. We win a game and then its three steps backwards.

Good post that VID. Very disturbing reading and clear we are in deep deep trouble. I always look at the last few games and try and see if we are in trouble can we get points ? Last 5 games -
CiŁy (a)
Everton (h)
West ham (h)
Saints (a)
Burnley (h)
