Technically Guzan was also a free. He had been released and Lambert ended up re-signing him.

And Westwood was under a million.

As others have said, this is all about stability in the crew while the ship is sailing through a storm, and a clear sign that owner Randy has had a change of heart and decided to invest in the good merchandise he has before either sticking with it longer term or selling on at a good going price.

I just hope that this somewhat hasty rash of long-term signings all works in favour of the team and the results for the rest of the season and beyond....

Irony overload: the day he signs a new contract, Solskjær gets the push from Cardiff.

I bet he now regrets the day he turned us down and stayed at Molde.

Funny how things turn out.

I think the two were totally separate things. He got emotionally blackmailed into staying another year at Molde, then wanted to leave.

Ok not quite £30m... but over £40m on the bench.

I reckon it's the beard that's done it
I reckon it's the new shirt my class gave to me when I retired last July...worn it every game this season! Under my jacket v Newcastle which fully explains the 0-0!

He's kept a professional at all times, and never said a bad word about the club or fans

Really?  I think he's been downright patronizing to the fans at times.

No, not quite £30m. Not even half. And you're also wrong on the 40m. But apart from that you might have a point.

That is skewed by two players who were signed under previous managers.

I am not sure he was even offered the Villa job to be honest. It was just an interview that got leaked and so everyone tried to save face after he wasn't accepted. But I guess we will never know.

Bloody great few days tracking randy's jet though wasn't it? :)

If you include Cleverly it's around £20m, but yes he's on a loan to buy deal and the subs do tot up to £40m, even at conservative £18m for Bent.

As I said on another thread this statement from Tom Fox is interesting -

- ''We have a long-term vision for Villa and Paul is completely integrated into our plan to manage the club carefully and ambitiously back to a position in the Barclays Premier League appropriate to our history and collective expectations."

True, but he's kept them unlike the majority of the players he's signed over the past two years before the U-turn.

Bent was 18m rising to 24m depend on certain milestones being reached. I very much doubt his fee reached the full 24m.

Therefore:
Given 3m
Okore 4m (who was also out for the majority of last season so can't really be counted)
Bacuna 1m
Grealish Free
N'Zogbia 9.5m (also out for one full season of lambert's time here)
Sanches 4.7m
Bent 18 - 24m, depending on what extras ended up being paid out.
