One thing is blindingly obvious that without some real money being spent on the squad we will struggle again next season. A look at the league table tells us that the majority of clubs below us have changed manager this season, so clearly that by itself will not bring about improvement. There needs to be some serious investment this summer because, without it, we are in for more of the same until we finally go down and I think that is regardless of who is manager.

could have managed a 10th   but now could be a 17th  . Whats the different in the payments of where you finish?
Last year was about £700,000 per place. I'd guess this year will be more as it's the first year of the new TV deal.

Chris, you do say 'changing the manager' as if the only thing which matters is not who's actually in charge, merely the literal act of change. If the alternative was Big Sam I suppose I would keep Lambert, but if the alternative is an improvement then (in the summer) I would replace him. I agree that whoever's in charge the squad needs investment, but I still think the current lot might have more to offer in a better set-up.

As for that Spurs fan, Christ, why are those Villa fans on the comment thread giving the game away? Someone needs to take him.

I think he'll go as soon as this season is over, as did the previous manager, because with Benteke out until Christmas I think even Randy will know that if we don't spend some proper money on new players in the summer then we're pretty much doomed.  And I can't see Lambert being entrusted with transfer funds or the fundamental reorganisation that's so obviously required.

I just want Lambert's replacement to be someone with a proven desire to play football on the deck with ball retention high on his agenda. Also someone who values pressing the game at home. I realize those blokes don't grow on trees but they are certainly out there. I think there is money to spend and it didn't include selling Benteke, and you can find players in France and Spain that like to keep the ball. Our ability to give the ball away at times beggars belief. That simply has to be put right.

The most depressing and alarming thing is that there are pages and pages of discussion on if Lambert should be sacked.
He humiliated our beloved and noble club in any manner doing things that I had never seen in a football pitch, no matter the category, and still we are discussing IF he should be sacked.

Believe me mates, that could happen only in England. In any other country of the world he would have been sacked 4 months ago, if not last season.

Please note that I do not want to criticize, you surely have a culture and a vision of football that is unique in the world, but one thing that I do not understand is how you can give to the stability  more importance than to the logic.

He wouldn't have lasted past last January in 99% of the clubs in the world in my opinion. It was incredibly desperate and embaressing. God knows where the run came from after that. I'd like to think that the backing of the fans in the ground at the time helped quite a bit.

I imagine there might be a fair amount of churn with managers after the world cup so it might be a good time to be looking.

Of the managers that are known to be available/likely to be available I'd be looking at:

Bielsa - Simply mad but if it worked there would be no limit to how good we could become.  Equally likely to end in disaster.
Paul Clement - currently assistant manager at Real Madrid but may be looking for a full time role.  Ideally there would need to be some additional football knowledge higher up the club too but I've long said that we need a DoF.

Not sure about Spurs, but it is being mooted that Neil Lennon might be leaving Celtic in the summer and they might be interested.

I was going to start this post by writing that  Lerners track record appointing managers isn`t encouraging, but we all wanted and welcomed PL (remember Norwich away - PLs claret and blue army chant) and i presume that must have guided his thinking. I really dont think he has an informed opinion about a replacement, which is where Faulkener comes into the picture, i dont think he has much more insight than Lerner does, the blind leading the blind if ever i saw it. Lerner was apparentley swayed about Mcleish by the now infamous letter from Ferguson and was totally oblivious to the wishes of the supporters - with catastrophic results for all concerned. Also the appointment of Houllier was an accident waiting to happen, This time, i genuinely fear for the club if the past mistakes are repeated.
