I was hoping for a Lambert sacked headline first thing morning even if it was only an April Fools joke

It would've set me up for a better day at least

Come the summer, Lambert should start from scratch, getting rid of all the young players and replace them with more experienced, older players. He has to play to his strengths. At Norwich he had a decent team made up of lower league finds that had a few years experience under their belts and relished the chance to step up a level. It's a formula that works for Lambert.

Young, talented, promising players need coaching. That appears to be his greatest weakness. It was a nice idea as well as a very cost effective one but if Lerner wants to persist with Lambert, he should at least allow him to do what he's good at, not expect him to be something he's not. It's like asking Big Fat Sam to have a team full of 8 stone weaklings. It's never going to work.

I sincerely hope this is an April fool and you aren't insinuating that he starts by building a side round the permanent signing of Grant Holt? Are you?

Not at all. I think if Randy wants to continue over the next few years with Lambert as manager, as I said above, he should allow him to operate at what he's good at, rather than expect him to be something he's not.

We have good young players in the squad.  We should be adding to them and not replacing them.

I'm not claiming we don't have good young players in the squad. I've never thought that our problems are down to the squad, whether they be from the lower league or the Dutch league. I just don't see the point of adding to them when it doesn't play to Lambert's strengths. Quite the opposite, it's his weakness. If we wanted a manager that could coach and develop a young, promising and talented group we should have recruited a manager that specialises in that area.

As it seems very likely Randy will extend Paul Lambert's contract and he's to be our manager for the next 3 to 4 years, at least allow him to operate with a squad that best meets his talents.

I don't know enough about how he built the squad at Norwich to comment, but for me our only way back to the business end of the table, other than becoming the next Man City, is through getting players in young and developing them.

Lambert's shown he has an eye for a player in who he's brought in, with some exceptions, so that's half the battle.  The rest is developing them, which is presently a work in progress.

Call it what you will.  There are no quick fixes for Villa, so we have to take a longer term view of things if we are to ever get back to where this club should be.

Only messing

Although I'm not sure what long term view Lambert held when he got Grant Holt for Christmas

He didn't. It was purely short term as will be evidenced by his departure in May.
