I'd be really interested to hear the name of a manager, past or present, whose every purchase has been a gem.

Ferguson, Wenger and Mourinho have all got some shocking signings on their CVs.

Ferguson - Massimo Taibi, Juan Sebastian Veron
Wenger - Antonio Reyes
Mourinho - Torres :-) ok well I cant think of any but there are some.

Big difference being of course those above shocking signings were all significantly more than the £2m paid for Luna for example.

Much as I'd like to pin Torres on Mourinho that was someone else. Can't remember who with the constant changes at that circus. (De Matteo maybe?)
However you can have £30M superstar Andrei Shevchenko. :-D

Wasn't Shevechenko signed because he was Abramovich's mate?

Up until their arrival in this country, if I could have picked two foreign players who would have definately been a success over here it would have been Veron and Shevchenko.

Well Abramovich did anyway.

Shevchenko was years past his sell by date by the time he made it here.

You can add Khalid Boulahrouz from Hamburg 8m, Shaun Wright-Phillips 21m,  Tiago from Benfica and poor Jiri Jarosik ended up being sent off on loan to the Rags.

If we're looking for a manager that's wasted money in the transfer market look no further than King Kenny.

Even Ron Saunders bought some duds. Every manager does. But for some reason when Lambert does it, it's because he is useless rather than it just goes with being a manager of any club at any level.

Exactly. Can we put his transfers to bed and move on to his tactics (or lack of them)?

With the likes of Veron or Schevchenko at least they were class acts that just didn't work out at the club or in the PL in general.  I think those can be forgiven as people weren't exactly exclaiming "What the fuck are you doing?" at the time they signed.  Although possible they were with Schevcheno purely down to the price tag given his age.

And in all fairness, the twins was a relatively low cost punt for Man Utd, not disimilar to the likes of Bowery for us.

£20m for Hendersen, £35 for Carroll and another £20m for Downing - now there's your transfer lunacy!

Well you say that, but that's not what the original argument was about. It was about whether we'd lose money on a lot of our signings, and I don't think we would.

I was just reponding to the point that his transfer record can't be used as a stick to beat him with. I wasn't around during the original argument to be fair.

I think you have a selective memory. Last season Lowton showed signs of really developing, not only as an attacking full back and the best crosser at the club but also defensively. I can't remember who is was but there was one game last season where he had the perfect game, everybody on here was praising him as he didn't put a foot wrong. I'd also argue that our full backs are done no favours by Lambert's insistence of playing them very narrow, allowing opposing wide men both time and space to run at us

Speak for yourself. As I say, he was the least bad in a diabolical defence which doesn't automatically mean that he performed well defensively. I'm not sure what one 'perfect game' against Sunderland proves exactly? Not that it is a very good example as we dominated in that game and thus he wasn't tested much defensively anyway. Also, I am only referring to his defensive ability. There is no denying his footballing ability and offensive contribution. However no amount of ability going forward compensates for not being able to defend when you are a full-back. Bacuna has already shown that he is a far better defender than Lowton so I hope Lambert can possibly find midfield role for him as that would allow him to play to his strengths.
