Did we fill the away end today ? Top marks to all that went.

I think we sold 1300 out of 1900. Fair play to those that went - not the easiest journey on New Years Day.
Indeed, trains were non existent I think.

yes, I have nothing but respect for those who take time to attend our away games and especially those during the holidays when money is most scarce.

There were no trains or metros between Newcastle and Sunderland. We joined up with the Edinburgh Lions in a minibus for that trip. Nice little bunch.

Trains to and from Newcastle have been fine. *

However, there were no trains or metro from Newcastle to Sunderland.  Thanks to the Edinburgh Lions for laying on a mini bus.

* The wretched train we're on back has encountered several problems.  Running rather late.  Too tired to be amused.

Bloody railways.

I was coming down the A1 at lunchtime and counted nine Villa coaches heading the other way in convoy. Made my heart thump a bit.

I think the Travellers Club took nine. Others from different groups were safely tucked in a pub car park by then.

Vlaar played a captain's game. He supported our players when in trouble with the ref but did it in a decent way instead of the Man Utd way. When we saw him outside Villa Park several weeks ago, all the other players had gone. Ron was last in the car park but still walked over to talk to some kids. I hope he gets through his tendency to pick up injuries and continues to play for us for a long time.

stick him next to another solid CB and all of a sudden we look a very different side in terms of leadership and defensive stability. Clark has certainly come on and improved because of playing next to Vlaar. He's a proper leader on and off the pitch.

Get in another quality CB who's been around the block to partner Vlaar. Then stick Clarky at left back. Job done.

Agree with that, apart from putting Clark at left-back.  Not sure he's got the pace to play there

Any one know when Bennet is due back.  In flashes last year he looked promising.
Probably deserves a run of games before we buy another LB.

I've got no problem with Clark partnering Vlaar. Next season we should have Okore added into the equation too. The issue for me is having a solid, composed individual player who can fill in when Vlaar's not available because our defensive capabilities differ too much when we don't have him. A loan signing might be sufficient for the rest of the year. Until he got into the Newcastle side earlier in the season, I would have said Mike Williamson because he was very under-rated and they look very different with and without him. That's the type I'm talking about though. That type of signing would hardly be huge news and probably wouldn't  have huge wage demands but they would be very useful.

Long, long day...but worth it. Let's hope the fixture list is kinder to us next season. Whatever happened to local derbies on Boxing & New Year's Day? I'll have jet lag tomorrow!

.

I know how you feel.  We've had two horrible to get to games on consecutive New Year's Day.  Conversely, Boxing Day fixtures have been kind.

This train is now delayed.

It's madness having folks travel long distances on bank holidays though, utter nonsense.  Almost makes you pity the Penzance Reds. Actually, ignore me - I've got coach fever..fcuk em!

Happy New Year all
