The title is sometimes misunderstood to refer to the character in the foreground screaming, but the painting was originally titled "The Scream of Nature" and the figure is just defending his or her ears from the noise.

Something that is sadly not often necessary at Villa Park these days.

And the red sky is thought to be the result of volcanic activity, which can often create spectacular sunsets.
