Looking at the face on the bloke behind him I'd be surprised if that brave villa soul was ever seen again  :o

He'll be alright, it's only Cuddles' dad!

Why do they all look like Peter Sutcliffe or Jimmy Nicholl?

Maybe Bramall Lane ? Maybe The Victoria Ground ?
Maybe somebody could blow up the picture and see if they can  identify a programme ?

Maybe it is from their FA Cup run in the mid 1970s ?
Knocked out in extra time of a semi final replay by Fulham with the very last kick of the game.  ;D

What is a young Michael Palin doing there behind the single balloon? Is he rehearsing the 'yes we are all individuals..." scene?

Not West Ham away of that season as they started using this cover for the match versus Coventry which was before West Ham.

Reading through our home programmes for that season, it is almost certain that this picture was taken at our fixture versus Blues on 18 Sept 1976. New rectangular cross-section crush barriers had been installed. The terrace was still known as the Witton End, even though, by the end of the season, the new North Stand terrace had taken shape with the Upper tier in construction behind it.

I'm intrigued by this picture.  Who is the lad with the Villa scarf?  Was he/is he a Villa fan with a reckless disregard for his own safety, and did he survive this remarkable display of defiance?  Or was he, dare I venture to say, a nose who nicked a Villa scarf and is bearing it on his wrist as a trophy?  The fact that he's standing on his own makes me thing he is/was one of us.

Note, there's a lad right at the front who seems to be reading what was probably the match programme.  I've tried enlarging the photo but even with the aid of a magnifier I can't really make it out.

I reckon the youth with the Villa scarf is with the bloke to his left and the latter's Dad, who looks like Paddy from Emmerdale Farm with hair. They told him that he would be alright with them and are now trying to disown him.

Despite this being at the time when football violence was at its worst, the Witton End was rarely segregated and violence in there was rare.

Looking again at the programme, the three who can be seen holding it do not seem to hold up an identical match of the programme from the match that I suggested it was.

A few of the older generation have gone for the classic weekend button up shirt, trousers and jacket combo. Ideal for both the game on the Saturday and church on the Sunday.

Looks like a young Robbie Savage a few rows back, holding up something that is around his neck.
