Villa v Barcelona - Super Cup 1983
« on: September 22, 2013, 09:33:57 PM »

I still laugh when I watch this coverage and how dirty cheating gits Barca were this night.  However, what I had never noticed was Ken McNaughts boxing gloves impersonation to the goalkeeper after the 2nd goal went in - comedy genius.

Ken McNaught's shadow boxing is actually my major memory of that game. Very funny.

My major memory of that game from the Holte is seeing the Trinity spending most of the game on their feet gesticulating at the antics of the Barcelona players. I had completely forgotten the McNaught incident until I saw it again a couple of years ago.

My major memory of the game is Sid getting booted airborne into the back of the net.

I remember laughing my socks of at the unbelievable behavior and indiscipline throughout the Barcelona team.

It made the victory even sweeter.

The first game I stood on the Holte. Before that i'd always been in the seats with the family. Happy days!

A friend of mine  managed to get me the whole game including extra time from the bbc vaults on video - the beeb only showed 20 minutes. Highlights on sportsnight of the game .

Sometimes I watch it back and as said earlier its staggering how dirty barca were that night.

I bought the full game on DVD off E-Bay a few years ago.

The two games I remember most queuing up to get in for are Barcelona and Juventus in '83. I don't remember many Barcelona fans at Villa Park. But when Rossi scored for Juventus I thought I was in Turin.

A fair number of UK based Italians were at that game - IIRC they had half the Witton End and quite a few fans in the Witton Lane stand.

My brother has always said the opposite, that when Juventus scored you could hear a pin drop inside Villa Park.

I was only twelve but my recollection is of most of the Witton Lane stand celebrating. But there was an eerie silence when time seemed to stand still for a moment on The Holte.

It was a horrible moment when they scored - IIRC after 2-3 minutes. I honestly felt the tie was lost then. That Juventus team had the core of the Italian world cup winning team plus Platini and Boniek and over 2 legs they murdered us. I felt we would need to keep a clean sheet at home and instead we were chasing the game for an hour.

Can anybody recall who played at right back - I don't think it was Swain? I saw their goal coming as soon as their left winger back heeled the ball to beat our full back (too easily) and make space for a cross to Rossi. Poor Des Bremner was a competent stand in at centre half but he was no Allan Evans, and certainly no match for Rossi, Boniek et al.
