The first time he entered my consciousness was when he picked up some award - a Brit? - in 1986 and said that the only thing that would make him happier was the Villa winning the Milk Cup. Anyone who was flaunting their love of football in the mid-80s was not doing it to be cool and, if anything, were setting themselves up as a social pariah.

I saw him at an away game once, can't remember where it was but he'd got more tickets than he needed so he was trying desperately to give the tickets away. After a while some fella near me tried desperately to give him money for them but Nige was insistent he wanted nothing! Top bloke!
