I suspect in Mat's case he has had to take a step back. It must have been very difficult, being a Villa fan and having to report on that stuff, season after season. He is one of us and shouldn't be bracketed with some of the rest

I agree entirely.

I can't stand the Mail's godawful football coverage - or any of their online stuff, for that matter - but Mat Kendrick is one of the good guys, and one of us.

Unlike that absolute fucking thundercunt Bill Howell, who is a terrible writer. That "send us the bill" thing after the trouble against albion, which the Mail pulled, was one of the worst bits of "journalism" I've ever seen.

Neil Moxley - once he gets past his disdain for Lerner - always used to be relatively level headed about us, despite being a nose (something he used to keep quiet when he stood on the Holte with us for matches, when I knew him at school).

Part of the problem football writers have is that, unless they're big enough to do what they want (Henry Winter, Patrick Barclay etc) or national journos without a "beat" of their own, and especially if they are local writers, they have got to manage to say what they think whilst not sufficiently pissing off the owners of the clubs they cover to get themselves banned (which is truly petulant nonsense, but club owners do it from time to time).

I believe Mike Ashley has a long history of banning north east sports writers whenever they say stuff he doesn't like. I know Randy is no Mike Ashley, but I can imagine the same rules apply.

Odd you should record Paulie standing on the Holte with blue nose Neil Moxley. I used to do the same with his dad with whom I went to school at Camp Hill. Likewise he was a nose and the son of a local journalist.

Listening to Franks on Radio WM on the way home yesterday made me laugh. He was leading all his usual pet callers (starting with "Tom", who changes his position after each match) and managed to create a concensus amongst them that there were two main reasons for the defeat and for our general predicament. Looking specifically at yesterday's match, he was quite unable to see the conflicting and illogical position he was taking. On the one hand all the goals were the result of defensive blunders and inadequacies by the back line (which they were). On the other hand it was because the transfer policy brought in so many foreigners with no PL experience.

What this assertion that we are in trouble because of the transfer policy recruiting lots of these nasty foreigners with no PL experience ignored (and Franks even repeated the baseless rumour that Villa were consulting with Garde as to which players to recruit in the summer) was that the back line are all hugely experienced in the PL and 3 of the 4 have been at the club for years not months. Our goals yesterday were created by a very clever free kick from Veretout and a wonderful strike from Ayew, both of whom had no PL experience before this year. It was actually an ok performance with some very good football, apart from the vastly PL experienced defence, who cost us the game!

I know Franks spends time with some of the thicker ex pros who get to air their views constantly (he was with Shearer at a forum at the Copthorne Merry Hill on Thursday) but he could try to make his comments relate to what he sees and bring in some logic rather than getting his views from Talksport.

I know it's cowardly but I just can't bring myself to listen to any local radio station with Villa being so crap. I've even given up looking at the Mail.
I can't the gloating from the local media.

I was listening to it on the way back and I find Paul Franks makes my mood even sourer. His irritating tabloid style of presenting winds me up no end.

The fact they're queuing up to dance about the lack of experience line as well, when its the most experienced element of the team, in the back five, who consistently fail us, is maddening.

Same here. Deliberately didn't put WM on on the way to work this morning because I couldn't bear the thought of Adrian Goldberg rejoicing in our predicament.

If he hates it that much I am quite happy for them to be relegated out of it instead of us.

'Froggy' was on tonight and his solution to or defensive problems was to recall Baker and play him left back!
