On signing his new contract in January, the England international had said he intended to be at the club "for the long run".
"There was no way I was going to bail out," he said at the time.
"This is my club and I want to be here. That's why I am committing my future."

It is a staggeringly duplicitous statement and I genuinely can't see how anyone defends it.

I love how loads of our fans have suddenly decided he's not that good and won't get in their team. Have a word with yourself, you weren't saying those things when he led us past Liverpool into the cup final. I suppose we've got something similar to look forward to when Benteke leaves ::)

He wasn't being linked with Man City when we beat Liverpool, but if he was he, he still wouldn't be good enough for them.  Benteke I do think is good enough for them, I think he's potentially good enough for any team in the world.

Or maybe something changed that we don't know about. Maybe he doesn't get on with Sherwood, maybe getting twatted in a cup final made him realise that he wanted win things, maybe something else. I bet plenty of us have had a change of heart at work in the past and gone from very happy to wanting to leave pretty quickly.
And who is to say the club knew? Once the clause was in the contract it's out of their hands if he stays or not. Maybe it's been dropped on them just like it has us?

Or maybe he's just a bit of a twat.

Delph is a good player, but the fact he doesn't score much or create all that much should mean he's easier to replace, with the right money, than Benteke will be.

Assume then Gueye is a straight swap for Delph. Richards for vlaar, which overall I'm guessing should be ok ??

And we should say c u next Tuesday Delph, you knob! I have become more cynical about the modern game, but after his statement in January he was ab bit of a modern day hero of mine. I have not felt this kicked in the nads by a player maybe since Yorkie back in the day when I was much younger and less cynical. He has done much more for us and deserved his move to. Delph we have patched up, stuck by, seen through pro form and been shafted by him.

Overrated by virtue of plying his trade in a talentless midfield. A poor man's James Milner.

6 years.  He's done his penance. Good luck to him.

2 years at a good level and just as he's starting to fulfil his potential he's off.

I don't think Gueye is a direct replacement for him, more an improvement on Sanchez.

The midfield has a couple of number 10s who can also play wide in Grealish and Gil, a couple of defensive destroyers in Gueye and Sanchez, with Westwood a deep lying continuity player. Gardner may have a role to play, but there is a big hole in there for a couple of quality box-to-box players now Cleverley and Delph are gone.

Same as Milner then?
