Villa U21 0-0 Fulham U21 - 15 mins: Very little action to report so far. The only real chance fell to the visitors on 14 minutes when Ange-Freddy Plumain forced Jed Steer to get down and make a save. The Villa keeper managed to force the low drive to safety. Villa are lining up in a diamond formation with Daniel Johnson sitting, Graham Burke and Jordan Graham either side and Callum Robinson in behind the front two of Nicklas Helenius and Jordan Bowery. Who can catch Paul Lambert's eye?

Villa U21 0-0 Fulham U21 - 30 mins: Villa's best chance of the game so far fell to Jordan Bowery. Janoi Donacien picked the forward out with a clever through ball. Bowery continued towards goal but dragged his left-foot shot wide of the target. Lots of possession for Gordon Cowans' men but the game is still desperately short of chances.

Villa U21 0-1 Fulham U21 - GOAL - 83 mins: It's the visitors who make the breakthrough. A long ball over the top is met by Moussa Dembele who controls well before neatly tucking past Jed Steer.

Villa U21 0-3 Fulham U21 - FT - Villa are knocked out of the Barclays U21 Premier League Cup after three late goals from the visitors. It had been a cagey affair at Villa Park up until the last seven minutes when Moussa Dembele found space in the Villa defence to deliver two killer blows. Ange-Freddy Plumain added the third in stoppage time. It was a frustrating night for Villa. The claret and blues fielded a very attacking line-up but it struggled to click on the night. Gordon Cowans will demand a positive response when his side return to league action against Liverpool at Langtree Park next Monday.

Bowery never ever seems to look  remotely close to scoring a goal. He didn't score much at League 2 level. He's a hard worker, and a big lad, I wonder if a switch to center-back could be in the offing for him. Obviously this would be at a lower level at another club. He's about a million miles from Premiership standard. In all honesty I sometimes doubt he's league standard. I can see him in the conference or a level close to it.

Helenius seems well short of confidence. Perhaps the change of country has been hard, but he looks a good year or two off. He can't be all bad as he's a Danish international, but whether he'll ever be Prem quality is another matter.
