Lightning slow.

I know the answer myself and will discuss this guy in a minute but can anyone remember who it was that BFR described as Lightning Slow? I always felt it was a bit unfair on a guy who played with distinction for two seasons and scored one of the best Villa Park goals ever........... Any guesses?

Kent Nielsen.

Yep. Do we know why BFR sold him? Shaun Teale Man of Steel was a fantastic replacement but relatively unknown at the time. Nielsen's goal vs Inter is still in my top 10 of Villa strikes. He scored a stunner at QPR as well in 89-90 if I remember rightly.......

Didn't BFR want to go to a flat back 4 and felt Nielsen wasn't up to it? Or am I imaging that, which is distinctly possible.

lets see it again.  Is this game available on DVD anywhere yet? I have the 90-91 season tape and the European tape that came out on vhs in 1992 ish but my video is long gone. Great game, great goal!

"The English are back, and they are the best"

Which night did you prefer - 1990 or 1994? 1994 was arguably a better performance and more fondly remembered because we progressed that night. The 90 match is still tainted in memory by what happened in the second leg. Tony Daley might not have scored (well, officially) in the 90 match but he was almost world class that night.

Based purely on the home legs, i'd go for 1990. We were massive underdogs, it was the first big game for an English club since the ban, I don't think anyone gave us a chance and that Inter side was top top quality. And yet they were lucky to leave VP with only a 2 goal defeat. One of my top 5 VP games without a doubt. It was mental on the Holte that night.

'94 was great as well, especially as I was Lower North so had a great view of the penalties, but '90 is the winner for me.

Yep.  A team that consisted of arguably the three best players in the German team that had won the World Cup that summer and a fair sprinkling of the Italian team that had reached the semi-finals.

Tony Daley's finest game for our club. He took Braeme to the cleaners.

I remember when Denmark won the European Championship in 92.Big Ron was a commentator and Nielsen played really well, someone asked Atkinson-what did you sell him for ?

quick as flash Big Ron replied "about 200 grand"

1990 v Inter was the best experience I have ever had at Villa Park. Amazing performance and atmosphere.

Birchy was man of the match, marking Mattheus out of the game. His best performance in a Villa shirt. I remember going back to a mates after the match to watch it again and seeing Trappatoni bang his head on the dugout.
