Basketball player comes out
« on: May 02, 2013, 12:57:00 AM »
Just realised there was no mention or thread for this. With NBA player Jason Collins recently coming out as gay, will we finally start to see more sportsmen and women coming out? Surely in this day age a persons sexuality is irrelevant? As far as I can tell Collins has had pretty much universal support. Will we see the day when a current football player in the English leagues comes out?

High-profile, unlikely unfortunately. There's too much to lose in terms of ridicule and abuse from supporters of other clubs and the dressing room being such a testosterone-fuelled place, little point in making yourself insecure among colleagues.

I think it will happen and whoever makes the move to be the first to come out will be a hugely courageous individual.

Steve Davies the cricketer and Gareth Thomas the Welsh rugby international have come and have spoken of the support that they received from team mates at club and international level. Eventually it will happen in football.
