He's exactly the player we need. A committed, experienced and skilled pro to sit in front of the back four.
If he gets fit enough, he'll be good enough, so bring it on.

I'd love the opportunity to applaud him onto the pitch again. It's often said that there is no room for sentimentality in football, but after putting up with the very worst in our history to see a player who genuinely cares about the badge on his shirt would be a blessed relief.

Good luck to you Stan.
Spot on.
However unlikely, wouldn't it be wonderful to see him in a Villa shirt again.

A true professional, gentleman & warrior, unlike most of our current squad.

Couldn't agree more with you guys. He's an absolute inspiration to me as a fan, imagine what it would be like to work with him every day. He's everything our current squad isn't.

Good luck to Stan. he should be looking at MLS rather than championship or premier league for football.

It's not like he's ever depended on his pace. For a year, 2 at a stretch, his experience, leadership and positional sense blended together with some of the kids that are coming through, it could work really well.

If it's something that he want's to try and achieve after all he's been through, then fair enough and good luck to him.

If Leicester have proved anything this season, it's that anything is possible in football. Even if it seems like the stuff of fantasy or shmaltzy underdog sports films, it may just happen in reality.

I would love to see him on the pitch even if it was just a minute. Hope he can have an influence on the team especially with players and coaching. He is the rock we've been missing.

The very least this bloke deserves is a chance. I just hope that we give him that. In fact, we owe him it - in my opinion.

He knows his own health better than anyone, and if he thinks he could get back I'd like to see us give him a chance. It would be great just to have him involved with the club again.

Sorry Monty, for possibly the first time I have to disagree with your post.  Cancer of any form is too insidious to fuck about with.  I accept your point about him knowing his own health but, imo it's too risky.  I'm not saying he should let it dictate fully how he lives his life but, why, at that age; would you even consider it?

Years ago, a friend who had been given the all-clear from cancer decided to play indoor football.  He got a knock and the cancer returned and the medical professionals attributed it directly to the knock he'd received, he died.   Maybe this has stuck with me and clouded my judgement.

Sounds like bollocks.

A knock might cause metastatic spread but very doubtful it could directly lead to a relapse, especially in haematological cancer.

And after some gentle convincing, he finally has his son’s approval!

“Last night I was reading a book and told him about today and what I was going to be announcing,” Petrov said.

“He replied: ‘Daddy who are you going to play for?’ “I said ‘I would like to play for Villa again’.

“He turned around and said: ‘have you seen Villa playing lately? Really have you seen it?’

“I have cleared it with him now.

“I said to him as a father I tried to explain the team is going through something like this but the main thing is how they are going to bounce back and how they are going to regroup.

“I said ‘next year Villa will be really good and back in the Premier League.

“He said: ‘I will be happy with that but can you promise?’

“I need to make him a promise and that is a big promise. I don’t like to break promises.”

This is what we are crying out for. Even if he never makes the starting 11 we need this attitude,  dedication,  love for villa and determination next year.  The bloke has elevated his legend status again.

Agree completely. If he played 10 games but was club captain and was sorting out that dressing room, he would be well worth his place.

As it is, in that league, I reckon if he is fit enough, he will end up looking a decent player still. He always had time because he thought ahead of the game.

He reckons he has taken advice from his medical professionals and they have cleared it, if he can get himself to the required level of fitness, be monitored very very closely to ensure all is ok on the cancer front, welcome back Stan, not the greatest footballer to wear the claret and blue, but what he went through and the way he handled it probably one of the greatest people associated with the club and we have had a few.
Not a dry eye in the house if he makes his comeback and as already stated an influence that this club is so so in need off.

Thanks to Stan (and Rudy the other day) for a much needed good news story. We could do with some of this attitude rubbing off on other players.  Having some of this loyalty to the club, professional pride, and obviously hurting that we are in this situation. I wish him every success.
