Who can put a healthy guess on when that was taken?  I don't think I've ever seen the Holte more sparse than that.   Seems like everyone is huddled into the middle.

That is definitely versus Blackburn Rovers in 1963, I was at it.  Score was 0-0 and the touchlines that day were painted blue.  The same colour as my arse as it was that cold.  The year of the big freeze.  I remember it as clear as if it was yesterday; yet I can't remember what I had for my breakfast today!  Aston Villa...I love you.

I'm pretty sure it was the Blackburn game during 1962-63, when the winter was so bad that football was virtually postponed for a couple of months. We were skint and desperate for gate income so we put this match on even though the pitch was unplayable - the snow was rolled to make it just about possible. As a result the pitch was so damaged that we were the last club to play again once the weather improved, we had a backlog of fixtures and our worst run of defeats ever. The Mercer Minors never recovered.

It looks literally like they are playing on an ice rink.

And if I hadn't been there with my bluenose mate, there would have been even fewer on the Holte.

Maybe not an iconic photo but the first time I ever cried at a football match upon realising we wouldn't win the league (I was 12).

As an aside, how awesome does the Holte End look!

Good picture, but there's always something not so iconic about seeing a football shirt with a sponsor's name on it.

If that last one is too modern then how about this one?

It's circa 1923, and shows Witton born Cyril Spiers giving some of his team mates a lift home after a game. Again not exactly iconic, but a great photo nevertheless.

That's a good one Danno. Where's it from?

I've always suspected Claude Monet was a Villa fan.

Look at the Doc in that kit. Something about it reminds me of Alan Partridge in his leather thong.
